Elmer Stone Obituary

STONE, Elmer E. Elmer E. Stone of Manchester formerly of Vernon beloved husband of Edith (Purnell) Stone passed away Saturday, (August 5, 2006) at Manchester Memorial Hospital. He was born in Dedham, Massachusetts son of the late Edward Clifton Stone and Elsie Winifred (Hammill) Stone and had been a resident of Vernon for many years until moving to Manchester in 1951. Mr. Stone was a veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific as an Aviation Machinist's Mate, Third Class, United States Navy. He was a proud recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross & Air Medal for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight during operations in the Western Pacific Area from April 12, - August 8, 1945. Prior to his retirement in 1983 he was employed with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for over 30 years in the Assembly-Test Department as a Supervisor. Mr. Stone was a longtime member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Manchester. Besides his wife Edith he is survived by his daughter Shelley (Stone) Bochain and her husband Russ of East Haddam, his son Michael Stone of Amston, two sisters, Winifred Downey and her husband William of Sumner ,WA and Barbara Cook of Vernon, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 9, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 41 Park Street, Manchester. Burial with military honors will follow in East Cemetery, Manchester. Friends and family may call Tuesday, August 8th 6-8 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Book of Remembrance 41 Park St. Manchester, CT. 06040.
