Eugene Sigman Obituary

Dr. Eugene M. Sigman, 93, died peacefully on June 26th, 2021 in East Providence, Rhode Island. Eugene was the only child of Belle and Abraham Sigman. He was predeceased by his second wife, June Sigman, and his youngest son, Stefan Sigman. Eugene spent his first 9 years living in Czestochowa Poland; moving back to Buffalo, New York in 1938. He attended the University at Buffalo and graduated with a BA in History followed by an MD degree and residency in Urology. He served in the Air Force medical corps from 1954 - 1956 and later returned to Buffalo as an associate professor of urology at SUNY, Buffalo. In 1968, he moved his family to Connecticut, where he joined the University of Connecticut Health Center. He helped build it into a premiere hospital and academic medical center. He served in various capacities, including Chief of Urology, and ultimately Dean of the School of Medicine. He was conferred the titles of Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus. Professionally, he was passionate about teaching medicine, patient care and academic rigor. His interests were broad. When not involved in practicing medicine he avidly studied history and was a skilled pianist with a deep knowledge and love of classical music. In later life he became a gourmet cook and enjoyed the company of his dogs and rescued cats who wisely made their way to his door. Eugene is survived by his children Aric Sigman, Mark Sigman, Karl Sigman and Nicholas Sigman, their spouses and 11 grandchildren. There will be a small service for immediate family members only. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimers' s Association at alz.org.

My deepest condolences to all of you. I was your father's friend and house/pet sitter for years and I enjoyed many good times over a delicious meal up at the house with them. He shared many of his wonderful books with me and we had great conversations about history. He had the largest flock of hummingbirds at his feeders on the patio that I have ever seen! He was a kind and fascinating man and I will always treasure the memories that I have of him. Rest in peace, Gene.

I knew Gene for many years as both colleague and Dean. I was tasked with varied responsibilities during his tenure and thus was able to take a broad measure of the man.

He was a unique and genuinely humane person , a dedicated physician and a Dean devoted to the highest standards. He was a pragmatist but never doctrinaire. He was a clear decision maker , honest and straight with you if you held a different view.

He as terribly kind to me giving my family access to this vacation place on Nantucket. That was Gene for sure, a real person in every way. No artifice, no posturing, no nonsense. We spend many hours with he and June and it is just surreal to know they are both gone.

What a fine man he was and i will always think of him with deep affection and respect.
