My deepest condolences to all of you. I was your father's friend and house/pet sitter for years and I enjoyed many good times over a delicious meal up at the house with them. He shared many of his wonderful books with me and we had great conversations about history. He had the largest flock of hummingbirds at his feeders on the patio that I have ever seen! He was a kind and fascinating man and I will always treasure the memories that I have of him. Rest in peace, Gene.

I knew Gene for many years as both colleague and Dean. I was tasked with varied responsibilities during his tenure and thus was able to take a broad measure of the man. He was a unique and genuinely humane person , a dedicated physician and a Dean devoted to the highest standards. He was a pragmatist but never doctrinaire.
