Eva Walpole Obituary

Eva (Roth) Walpole, LCDR, USN, Ret., 76, beloved daughter and only child of the late Richard J. and Eva (Day) Roth, passed away on Wednesday (January 29, 2003). She was born in New Britain, and moved to Plainville where she attended local schools, before entering and graduating from Middlesex School of Nursing in Middletown. In June, 1948, Eva entered the US Navy. As a naval flight nurse during the Korean Conflict, she administered to countless wounded servicemen during her tours of duty, including the islands of Guam, Wake and Hickam AFB in Honolulu. She was also stationed in California and Alaska. During her many travels, she visited Tokyo, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong, India, and the Philippines. Eva also worked at the Pentagon and many US Naval hospitals, including those is PA and NY. She retired from the Navy on July 1, 1969 from the hospital at St. Albans, NY, returned to Connecticut and made Farmington her home. Retirement from the Navy did not mean retirement from the field of nursing. Upon settling in Farmington, Eva had positions at Avon Old Farms School, UConn Health Center, and Geri Care Convalescent Home, now Care Manor. She was a member of the Navy Nurse Corps Association and the Military Officers Association of America. She also had a love for animals, and supported several animal organizations. She is survived by several cousins. Eva will be remembered for her total dedication to the field of nursing, her 21 years of service to the US Navy, and the many friends she made around the world. Funeral services will be held on Friday, at 1 p.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Southington. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Farmington Fire Department Emergency Services, P.O. Box 200, Farmington, CT 06034.
