Marilyn,
Sorry for your loss. I am sure these past 20 plus years with Alan have been wonderful for you as he was a free spirit like yourself. I am sorry I did not get to known him! Love You

I am so saddened to hear of Al's passing. He was a wonderful man who had a magic touch when dealing with young men and women. He always knew when a student needed a stern push or a sympathetic pat on the back. Al was kind to all and a tremendous role model for those who had him in the classroom or on the playing fields. He gave to everyone he crossed paths with. My condolences to his family, we have lost a great one.

Al Nelson was one of the first teachers to ever make me really laugh. He was such a nice man, and searched out those who were struggling to help them get through hard days. I'm so sorry for your loss and will miss him very much.

I will always remember our study of short stories. Every word counts. I have thought of his teaching when running across a clever turn of words or powerful phrase. I feel fortunate to have been in his class.

In an attempt to get some leniency on a final exam question, I turned to Al to ask for sympathy for my lack of preparation, and his response makes me crack up every time I think it. He stared right at me with his little grin as he held up his two index fingers just slightly apart and said, "Mr. Schuller, do you know what this is? The doors of summer school and they are opening..." I did escape summer school, but that is a moment that has brought a smile to my face so many times over the last 35 years. May the doors be opening for you Al!
