Fred Dole Obituary

Reverend Fred (Ted) M. Dole, age 75, of East Hampton and formerly of Colchester, passed away February 9th with his wife and best friend of nearly 40 years, Edi, at his side. Born Oct. 19, 1940 in Framingham, MA, he was the only child of the late Fred E. and Nellie (MacLean) Dole. He was a graduate of Trinity College and later earned his Master of Divinity degree from Hartford Seminary. He was pastor of the Westchester Congregational Church for 33 years and following his retirement, he and Edi joined Marlborough Congregational Church. Marlborough soon called him to be their Associate Pastor. He was also an active member and longtime Chaplain of the Colchester-Hayward Vol. Fire Company. These last several years of service were some of his most memorable. Along with his years in ministry, Ted was also a professional photographer and a model train enthusiast. In addition to his wife, he leaves three children, Sheryl (Bobby) Scheidel of Colchester; Sandy (Lenny) Adams of Norfolk, VA; and Billy Cameron of San Diego, CA. He had four grandchildren, Joshua (Ana) Smith, Matthew and Brian Scheidel and Alexandra Adams. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be observed 11 AM Saturday (Feb. 20th) at the Marlborough Congregational Church, 35 So. Main St., Marlborough. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Marlborough Congregational, P.O. Box 57, Marlborough 06447 or to the Colchester-Hayward VFC, 18-54 Old Hartford Road, Colchester 06415. Care of arrangements has been entrusted to the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home of Colchester. www.auroramccarthyfuneralhome.com

Dear Edi,
It's almost one year ago you lost Fred. The first Christmas without him, I realized. In my life there is an empty place too, as we were befriended for more than four decades! In difficult times, in Casa Marterna, but also in my personal life when Betsy died, Fred and you were there to comfort me.
I wish you peace of mind, good memories and dear friends in the year to come.

Rev. Dole (Ted) was my minister when I was growing up in Salem, CT. He took us in his old VW bus to the Hartford Circus when we were little. This was a memory that has always been with me and all the kids in our church. In my adult life he was the Rev. of the Colchester Fire Dept. and the minister of the Westchester Cong. Church. A wonderful man and husband to his great wife Edie. He will be very much missed.

Edi, I'm so sorry to hear about your husbands passing. Going to the Westchester church at a very young age and listening to your husband speak was so wonderful to me. He had such a kind voice and I enjoyed all of his sermons. You and your family are in my prayers right now. He will be so missed.

To Edi and family,
I was so sorry to hear about Ted's passing. He was a fixture at Westchester for so many years, and was a good friend of my parents and our whole family. He and my dad shared interest in railroads, and the photos were amazing. Most of all, I miss his ministry at WCC, and he made a big difference in my life.

Pastor Ted, as we know him, was such a wonderful addition to the Marlborough Congregational Church. He was the Pastor in Westchester where many of my extended family resides and I remember him when he married some of my cousins before coming to Marlborough. He has taken many photographs of me and my family during very memorable moments and I will always cherish them. My thoughts and prayers go out to Edi and all of his family and many many friends. He made this world better while he was here and now he's just continuing to do his wonderful work by watching over all of us now. God Bless you Pastor Ted.

We at the Congregational Church of Salem remember with grateful affection Ted's service from 1963 to July 1966. It was here that he was ordained into the Gospel Ministry. We thank God for having brought Ted to us and using our small church as the springboard to launch him into a life of ministry.

In Christ,
Rev. Timothy B. Dubeau, Pastor

It is hard to imagine a world without Ted....I met him at a critical point in my life. His sermons made going to church engaging, heartfelt...almost personal. He married Paul and I on what would be the best day of my life. Ted embraced everyone that day...brought us all so close together with his words of wisdom, laughter and kindness. God speed my friend...when I think of you...my heart will smile, knowing you are still watching over all of us.

To the Dole family: So sorry to read of Ted's/Fred's passing. When I covered Colchester/Westchester for the Rivereast News Bulletin in the '90s, he was one of my contacts to know what was happening in the community. I remember doing an interview with him, which became a front-page article, about his photography and the professional pictures of trains that he took for calendars, which combined his two loves. For the past several years, I would run into him at tag sales, another of his interests. He was a very engaging person, and I'm sure the Marlborough, Westchester, and Colchester communities and the fire department will sorely miss him. God Bless you all.
