Frederick Lowman Obituary

Frederick Andrew Lowman, 75, of Barkhamsted, husband to Cheryl Lowman, passed away with his family by his side, on August 18th, 2023 after a long and spirited battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Frederick Albert and Erminia (Dallavalle) Lowman, and his first wife, Kathleen (Henry) Lowman.

Fred was born March 25, 1948 in Willimantic. Growing up in Columbia, he graduated from Windham High School in 1966. Being a math lover, he enrolled at CCSU, graduating with both a mathematics and art degree in 1970, followed by a MS in Elementary Education in 1975. For 35 years, he was a beloved math and shop teacher at Avon Middle School, Avon, CT. After retiring from teaching, he moved onto his dream job - working part time at Larsen Ace Hardware in Canton for the past 17 years.

Throughout his extraordinary life he made an impact on many people. Whether it be coaching or umpiring in Barkhamsted Little League (25 years) or doing bluebird/crow/chickadee talks around the state, Fred was always eager to share knowledge and educate. He was a participant in the DEEP Master Wildlife Conservationist Program and diligently fed his crows and birds every morning. Along with Cheryl, he was the author of a book called An Inky Summer, and was also an avid reader. Fred was a talented woodworker and enjoyed carving Santas each year to give to family members and friends. He excelled at baseball bat repair and had a national reputation as being one of the best. Fred was a Boston Red Sox fan and took pleasure in listening to games on the radio. He was also an avid golfer. Being generous was one of his main character traits and he was proud to have donated 168 pints of blood. Fred was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in New Hartford, CT for 40 years and served as an elder, trustee and on the Stewardship Board.

In addition to his wife Cheryl (Cassady) Lowman, Fred is survived by his sisters Carol (Larry) Roscoe and Janice (Earl) Wilson; cousin/best friend Paul (Mary) Dallavalle, his sons Brett (Kristin) Lowman, Jarett (Kacey) Lowman and Travis (Kim) Lowman; his step-children Kelly (Nick) Kohler, Joshua (Adrienne) Hodges, Esther (Robert) Ienuso, Laurie (Sangtae) Ahn, Lydia (Nathan) Jones and Grace (Raven) Ferguson-Hodges; grandchildren Beckett Lowman, Everett Lowman, Drew Lowman, Ellie Lowman, Maxwell Lowman, Finnegan Lowman, Liam Ienuso, Finlee Ienuso, Hunter Ienuso, Willow Ienuso, Lily Kohler, Jonathan Kohler, Lukas Kohler, Josiah Kohler, David Kohler, Kaiya Kohler, James Kohler, Theo Ahn, Joyce Ahn and adopted granddaughter Hannah Kennedy.

Special thanks to the staff at RCCA in West Hartford - Dr. Silver, Sue, Sabrina, Lisa, Kaylee and Alicia for all their excellent care and guidance for many years. Appreciation to the Larsen family at Larsen Ace Hardware in Canton for letting him work until the end. Thanks to the Saints of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, New Hartford, CT, who never stopped praying. Fred also wished to thank Cheryl for always being there through the ups and downs - he couldn't have done it without her.

Services will be held on Sunday, August 27 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 39 Prospect St, New Hartford, CT. A visitation will be held for family and friends from 1pm until 2:30pm followed by a funeral service at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, New Hartford, CT or to Sessions Woods in Burlington, CT.

Fred fixed a bat for me many years ago. I was trying to contact him to do another when I found this obituary. Please accept my late condolences on his passing. He was a man of great integrity. He wouldn't accept payment until I got the bat back and was satisfied with what he did. Not many people like that are around anymore. I'll put him in my prayers tonight. Michael Barton. I am sorry to just hear of Mr. Lowman´s passing. He was my 6th grade math teacher in 1999 and remember him so fondly. I would go in every morning during his "office hours" to ask him question after question. I am positive he had lots of other tasks to take care of but never once did he make me feel unwelcome. He left an impression on me through his patience, passion for what he did, and kindness. I am forever thankful for him. He helped me find my love for math and encouraged me to keep working hard. He will never be forgotten. Sending love to his family and friends.

So very sad to hear of Mr. Lowmans passing.
Mr. Lowman had such a wonderful impact on my children while they were at Avon Middle School, especially my son Rett. They shared a love of baseball, often tossing the ball back and forth before the school day, and of course many conversations on the Redsox. Mr. Lowman gifted Rett many of his antique baseball gloves, shards of baseball bats from many of the famous baseball players which he was repairing. Rett carefully mounted the cards w bits of wood w names of the players, in display boxes and is proud to display everything Fred gave to him.
But the most important gift he gave to not only Rett, his sisters and brother, was the time he spent making sure their math skills were learned-and also that they continue to try hard, never stop working at doing their best.
I am a lucky recipient of a treasured wood Santa that Fred carved, he learnt that I collected Santas from all over the world, and it is something I treasure.
The entire Ostafin family send our sympathies to the Lowman family. Mr. Lowman will be missed!

I was so sorry to learn of Mr. Lowman´s passing. Mr. Lowman was my math teacher for two (incredibly lucky) years of middle school in the early 2000s, and I have never forgotten the impact he had on me. His presence in my life was a true gift- especially during those awkward and uncomfortable teen years when I never felt sure of myself, especially not in math class! I´m now a psychologist and frequently have the thought that if I can pass on even half of the kindness, wisdom, and compassion Mr. Lowman showed me onto each of my patients, I will have succeeded.
Sending thoughts of healing and peace to his beloved family and friends.

I was so lucky to have Mr. Lowman for both 6th and 7th grade math. I had recently moved to Connecticut and was struggling with anxiety from the big adjustment. Mr. L would email me the score of my quizzes and tests the evening after I took them because he knew I would anxiously struggle to sleep if I didn´t know how I did. He never made me feel judged but he also didn´t coddle. He was an incredible teacher, and a true example of how Christ inspires us to live. I am so blessed to have one of his Santas, I will treasure it even more now. Thank you to the Lowman family for sharing such a wonderful person with us.

I had Mr. Lowman for 6th grade math. He was one of the first teachers to express confidence in me, and pushed my education by advancing me to a higher level math group. I saw him at Larsen's years later and had the opportunity to thank him for his confidence in me and his support. He seemed pleased (in a knowing sort of way) when I told him I was earning my doctorate. He is high on the list of several teachers I remember fondly and owe a debt for nudging me along my path. My sincerest condolences to his family and close friends for the loss you all are enduring.

I just read of Mr. Lowman's passing. He was my 6th grade math teacher way back in 1987 to 88. I grew up the brother of a girl who got a 780 on the SAT math section in 7th grade. So being compared to her was not fun. My self confidence was never great in math so I remember the day (still more than 30 years) when he took me aside after class and told me my success (I had just done surprisingly well on a test) wasn't a surprise to him. It shouldn't be to me because he saw that I had worked hard to learn the material and hard work pays off. He was the first teacher that I can remember who saw more in me than I did. I wish I had told him this.

My thoughts to his family.

I met Fred when I was a sophomore at Avon High School. Our mother, Marie, was a Health Aide at Avon Middle School, when Fred had just started teaching there in 1970.
Fred quickly became a friend of mom, and then the entire Welsh family. He often joined us for Sunday dinners. We all felt like we had adopted him.
At one of those family dinners, Fred spotted my tennis racket and asked who played. We quickly bonded over tennis. We enjoyed many spirited matches against each other.

Fred was instrumental in establishing the first Avon High School Tennis team, when I was a Junior. Couldn´t have been happier to be playing on that team with Fred as the coach. Some very fond memories.

I can still picture Fred driving his Karmann Ghia. It was green with a stick shift. In an act of generosity, or poor judgement, he would allow me to take the car to run errands.

In 1972 the Town of Avon began offering summer tennis lessons. I imagine Fred had something to do with that decision. Fred was the head instructor, and I was thrilled the town agreed to hire me as his assistant. Tennis was booming in the early 70´s. I felt some panic when more than 30 women showed up for the first lesson. Fred took it all in stride. I learned to teach tennis from Fred. I did my best to emulate his approach. I taught every summer while I was in college. It was the perfect job for me. All thanks to Fred.

Fred wrote in a card to me once, that happiness requires just 3 things. Something to do. Someone to love. And something to look forward to. Simple, but wise advice.

It´s been said that the measure on one´s life is the difference they make in the lives of others. It´s apparent that Fred did that for many of the lives he touched, including mine.

A great mentor and friend.
Thank you, Fred.

Our thoughts are with the Lowman family.

Fred was a coach, teacher and friend to me, which means he was fair, demanding and loyal. When Fred started teaching at Avon Middle School, our Mom, Marie Welsh, was the school health aide. Fred soon became an "adopted son" in the Welsh family and frequently joined us for Sunday dinners. All the Welsh boys (6) are saddened by his loss. As brother Bob said, he was one of the good guys! Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lowman family.

Fred was a gentle, kind, dedicated soul. I have many memories of Fred as a dad, a coach, and a fabulous wood crafter. I have a Santa Fred made me one year that even has Santa holding a calico cat just like the one we had. Thank you for the impact you had on so many lives here in Barkhamsted. Your memory will always bring a smile to my face. Lisa Hudkins

I met Fred through our hobby of baseball and he opened a door to finally collecting cracked game used bats.

Over the years a friendship grew and he became like a father to me. Will miss him dearly and the 4am to 5am texts and calls. We are both early risers.

The definition of gentleman.

Thoughts and prayers to Fred and his beautiful family always

I have so many memories of Fred that it´s impossible to pick just one. I feel so honored to have called him friend for at least 40 years and being a part of the family he helped to create from playing Santa when his Sons were very little to precious memories of them when they became adults and the wonderful women they married.. I loved his precious wife Kathy and after her passing I was so blessed to meet a wonderful person named Cheryl who completed Fred´s life and I grew to love this remarkable woman. Distance makes it impossible for me to attend Fred´s service, but my thoughts and heart will be with all of his family members on that day. to everyone

I am blessed to have known Mr Lowman as a wonderful neighbor, baseball coach, math tutor and most memorably as a wedding host when he shared his beautiful property with Josh and I to make our marriage vows. I remember him commenting on how much "Kathy would have loved it." And I pray that it brings comfort and peace to his family knowing they are together in Heaven for eternity with Jesus.
