George Hannon Obituary

George W. Hannon, Jr lived and died with his razor sharp wit, love of family, and passion for life still intact until his last breath. He passed away at home on September 25, 2019. He leaves behind his loving wife of 31 years, Susan Hannon, his eight surviving children, Patricia Hannon & Donald Odell, Margaret Hannon, Elizabeth Hannon, Kathleen Hannon & Reed Risteen, Colleen Hannon & John Young, Thomas & Susan Hannon, James Hannon, Mary Catherine Hannon-Gauthier & Steven Gauthier, and their mother Elaine Hannon. His 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews are also mourning his loss. He was predeceased by his son, David Hannon, and his grandson, Jonathan Redler. Family was most important to him, and he loved and lived for their visits and calls. He relished their successes and achievements, and was so very proud of each and every one. During the final weeks of his life, cherished family and friends expressed their love and gratitude for him through their tears and laughter. He was a successful businessman, retiring from the family insurance firm founded by his parents Mae (Stanton) and George Hannon Sr in 1941. He was a staunch Democrat with a passion for politics, and served with distinction in the CT House of Representatives and Senate. He was an avid Yankees, Green Bay Packers, and UConn Women's Basketball fan. No game went unwatched, even during the last week of his life. Our deepest gratitude goes to the private home health care aides and Middlesex Hospice care workers who provided him with comfort and loving care in the last weeks of his life. He had a special fondness for his doctor, Suzanne Tingley, MD who gave him trusted guidance and care. Donations in his memory may be made to Middlesex Hospice Program, 28 Crescent Street, Middletown, CT 06457. His family and closest friends will gather privately to celebrate his life and his final return to Sligo, Ireland, where the Hannon Family chapter began.

Time passes quickly: my Mother knew George as a child & he was always a wise advisor to me as a then-young politician. May his memory live on as a blessing for his family!

I extend condolences to George's family..like all of us, he wasn't perfect but he was a great businessman and a political leader in the fullest meaning of those words...I always enjoyed chatting with him during my days at the Capitol and visits to the Parma...I will remember him in my prayers...

I am so saddened to learn of the passing of my long time friend and colleague, George Hannon, with whom I had the honor to serve in the Ct. State Senate, during the late 1970s. He was a special person and talent and served well his family, community and the people of our State. He will always be remembered as a fine person who made a positive difference in making our greater community a better place for all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time of great loss. Sandy Cloud

Another great tree has fallen in the forest.
George was an estimable politician and a great advisor on many issues. He will be missed. May his memory live on as a blessing for his entire family.
