Dr. George Eugene McGowan passed away peacefully on November 24th at the age of 89. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Margaret "Peggy" McGowan. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1931 to George and Annie McGowan, he was raised in Saint John as the fourth of six children. He graduated Valedictorian from Université Sainte-Anne, and received his medical degree from Laval University Medical School. He completed his surgical internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, MA, and residency at St. Mary's Hospital, in Rochester, NY, and Deaconess and Children's Hospitals, in Buffalo, NY. Following his fellowship in pediatric surgery at Sick Kids, Toronto, Ontario, he founded the first pediatric surgery practice in Hartford, CT working at Hartford Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Newington Children's Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, UConn John Dempsey Hospital, and Connecticut Children's Medical Center. George met his wife, Margaret Ann Wahle, while she was working as a night nurse in pediatrics at St Mary's Hospital in Rochester, NY. They were married on May 19th, 1962. The birth of their son Mark and daughter's Martha and Theresa followed and in 1966, the family settled in West Hartford, CT where their sons Greg and Joe were born. He was a loving husband and devoted father who showed his growing family the importance of a good education, hard work, integrity, and being a gentleman. He loved caring for others, telling stories, and passing on his knowledge and wisdom to those who would listen. Ultimately, he was most happy surrounded by his family. He leaves behind five children, their spouses and 10 grandchildren: George Mark McGowan and his wife Chrissy Elizbeth McGowan of Fairfield, CT; Martha Ann McGowan and her long-time boyfriend David Michaud of West Hartford, CT; Theresa McGowan of Charleston, SC; Greg McGowan and his wife Ann McGowan of West Hartford, CT; Joseph McGowan and his wife Meghan McGowan of Boca Raton, FL; 10 Loving grandchildren: Madeline Ann, Christopher Mark and Greg George McGowan; Olivia Devlin, Riley and Mason McGowan; Tanner, Janey, Quin and Margaret McGowan. He is also survived by his brother Don McGowan, his sisters Theresa and husband Duncan Keenan and Barb and husband Bill Morrow, sister-in-law Claire McGowan, many nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his sister Mary and husband Lloyd Furze, brother Murray McGowan and sisters-in-law Mary McGowan and Catherine McGowan. I'm so sorry to hear Dr. McGowan passed. He was my daughter's surgeon at CCMC in 2000-2001. He was a very nice man and an excellent surgeon.

To all the beautiful members of Dr. McGowan's family, I wish to extend my most heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your father. Your Dad was a true gentleman, and someone I feel honored to have had the privilege to work with for several years, as a nurse in the office of Pediatric Surgery. The knowledge he shared with me are still lessons that I practice today. His large heart, his brilliant mind, his skillful hands, his smile, and his stories will be with me always. The photos that you have shared here are a lovely tribute. To see some of Dr McGowan's precious traits (his smile!) passed on in his grandchildren is a sign that he lives on....always in our hearts!

A true friend and associate in pediatric surgery for more than 20 years he was devoted to the care of newborns and children of all ages. He was a true pioneer in pediatric surgery and saw the opening of Connecticut Children’s as a wish come true. Always gracious, witty, with one more story to tell. He will be remembered by thousands of children and families that he cared for over the years. His gentle soul is at peace.

I remember as a child going upstairs to Nanny's apartment on Christmas Eve. She
would be playing Mary's Boy Child by Harry Belafonte. She would always be wrapping a shirt or sweater for your father. He would call and she would be so happy when he did. She would always ask about Peg , Mark , Martha , Theresa Greg and Joe. She loved your dad so much and I think there was always a bit of sadness that you folks lived so far away.

Your dad helped so many of his nieces and nephews out through out the years. through medical school , law school, always offering words of encouragement and
advice. They in turn helped others out and as a consequence his life had and continues to impact so many.

Thinking of all of you at this time

Dear Mark, Martha, Theresa, Greg, Joe and your loved ones,

We were deeply saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing.
His dedication to family was truly immeasurable.

His soft -spoken wisdom served as an inspiration to us all, while his never-ending dry wit was a “classic “, at all our family gatherings over the years.

His education and career in medicine was an amazing feat for anyone to even think to accomplish and especially in the face of his Dad /our grandfather being killed as a firefighter, when he and his brothers and sisters were all so young, and then having to go through undergrad and Med school totally in French also! I have often related that story to my medical colleagues only to see their astonishment in his wondrous perseverance and fortitude.

He and your wonderful Mom lived a totally selfless life, hallmarked by an undying faith and leading a path by example, that all of us may only aspire to.

Holly and I, along with our family, Julie and Mitch, will continue to keep you all close in our hearts and minds, at this time and always.

All our Love,
Rob Keenan

Mark, Martha , Theresa, Greg and Joseph and families.
I am so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He was kind, caring and so much a gentleman. I had some very nice conversations with him when my Dad was failing. I have found memories of your dear Mother. They were an impressive couple and such lovely souls.
Condolences from Dan and Joan McGowan in Calgary, Alberta. Our thoughts and prayers are with you particularly in such difficult times.

With deepest sympathy to the family of Dr McGowan. He was a skilled & caring surgeon with a wonderful bedside manor, as we experienced in 1984. Our first child was born with a birth defect and sent to CCMC for immediate surgery. Several days later, I met with my baby's surgeon, your father. I immediately knew we were in good hands. He had a calming effect on me. In total, Dr. McGowan performed 4 surgeries that first year on my little one. I've always felt so fortunate that Dr McGowan was our pediatric surgeon.
Sincere condolences,
The Weed family
