Gregory Nemergut Obituary

Gregory V. Nemergut of West Hartford, Connecticut died suddenly on Wednesday (July 14, 2022). Greg was born on November 17, 1959 in Bridgeport, CT. He was the son of Vincent and Annette (Ferrio) Nemergut who grounded him in his Catholic faith. Residing in Lordship, CT, he attended Fairfield Prep High School. His Lordship friends can attest to how cool Greg (Gut) was as they spent many evenings in his 70's basement complete with drum set and pool table. A graduate of Fordham University, Greg (Jarvis) met his Fordham crew and added to his amazing group of friends. He worked for IBM for 15 years in sales starting in Erie, PA and continuing his journey to Chicago, IL where he also earned an MBA at Loyola Chicago University. Greg (Goot) had many friends in Chicago. He played pick up basketball, attended Cubs and Bulls games, concerts and loved all that Chicago had to offer. He also completed the Chicago Marathon. He won over a fan for life when he met his wife Darnel at IBM. Their friendship blossomed into a beautiful union through love of food, wine, music and each other for 28 years. Greg and Darnel married in Chicago in 1997 and continued their journey to West Hartford, CT where Greg bought West Side Wines & Spirits. It was a dream of his to own a business and if you had the good fortune to talk with Greg about wine, you would always come away with a great story and an excellent selection. Greg was an unassuming philanthropist and provided support to multiple causes. Greg and Darnel were blessed with two amazing boys: Vincent Lloyd Nemergut, 21 who will be a senior at Bryant University and Matthew Alexander Nemergut, 19 who will be a junior at UMASS Amherst Isenberg School of Business. Greg was a devoted father and husband. His most treasured time was with family and friends – cooking a meal, coaching a team, watching all things sports on TV and sometimes yelling at the Red Sox, Celtics and Green Bay Packers. His faithful furry buddy, Capone was rescued from the CT Humane Society and brought joy to Greg. Upon selling his business August 2020, Greg embraced each day with all of us. In addition to his wife and children, his sister Grace Letts, husband Don Letts and nieces Honor and Liberty of London and his brother Mark Nemergut of VA, survive Greg. Greg's passion for life started with a slow beat and always ended as a crescendo with animation on any topic. His presence was felt when he walked in the room with arms open. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Peter Claver Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday August 13, 2022 in West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CT Humane Society, World Central Kitchen or the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. I met Greg through playing basketball with him in Chicago. Those days were great fun, a couple hours or basketball and a couple of beers and stories about sport, work, and family. My deepest sympathies for your loss. Greg remains in my memories and prayers as a terrific guy.

Mary Catherine and I were incredibly saddened to hear about Greg's sudden passing. He will forever be one of the best bosses I've ever had, but beyond that he was a great person - incredibly generous in sharing his passion for sports, music, food, wine and family with others. I learned a lot from Greg: what it means to be a good "manager" of people, the value in building a community by opening your door to others, the impact you can have just by sharing a dinner table or a bottle of wine. I'm including a picture of one of the many times Greg and Darnel invited West Side staff into their home for a world-class meal with world-class wines. Not pictured are the many great conversations I had with Greg, who was always open and interested. These dinners, thanksgiving mornings and long conversations remain some of my favorite memories. Our deepest condolences to Darnel, Vincent and Matthew.

So very, very sorry to hear of Greg's passing. My wife and I met him 20 years ago when we started going to West Side. He was a truly wonderful guy. Whether it be talking about wine, the Red Sox, or just life, Greg was simply a joy. Our thoughts and prayers are with Greg's family and the many people whose lives he touched both professionally and personally. May his memory be a blessing for all who knew him.

To Darnel and family - Please accept my condolences for the loss of your husband and father. Having recently experienced the loss of my parents and father in law - I know how difficult this is. I also know each day your sorrow will lessen and turn to gratitude that he was part of your lives. I am sure he forged a path with great examples of how he would want you to move forward. We are all here for you - please lean on us.
