Hartwell Thompson was a good grandpa and an accomplished man. He was intelligent, friendly, and willing to help people out. Every time I log on my computer I think of his payment for it. I would write him on holidays and saw him almost every summer but still I know there are many things I did not know about him. To everyone who knew him his departure from this physical world is a sad time, but we must not mourn to long for he is safely in a better place by now and would not enjoy our sadness. Therefore, I would say to whoever is out there reading this to mourn, but not too much and to continue with your lives while remembering the positive experiences and interactions you have had with Hartwell Thompson.

As a grandaughter of Hartwell Thompson, I am very proud to have had a grandfather so extraordinary. I am a young author and many people don't take it seriously when I say that I have written a 400 page novel because I am so young. But my grandfather was one of the few people who supported my writing without question, knowing what kind of potential I have and believing in my dedication to my novel. I credit him for being the biggest contributor in my finishing of the book because of the fact that he bought me my own computer, which allowed me to put in many many undisturbed hours of diligent work. Every time I work on my novel, I think of him. He always had a fantastic love for reading, writing, and vocabulary that astounded and inspired me. He was a very intellectual, knowledgable man who had an answer for everything. Sometimes we would say, "Let's call Papa!" if we needed to know something. As well as his vast knowledge of the English language, he had a special interest in the beauty of nature, which I find to be a very unique quality in a person today. I will always remember my grandfather as a magnificent thinker and I will never forget the special things he did for me to help me along in my young life. I am very proud to say that Hartwell Thompson was my grandfather and I will miss him very much.

It is one week since the memorial serivce for "Papa"- father and grandfather. As we were thinking of him on this sunny spring morning, the first Rose Breasted Grosbeak of the season appeared at our bird feeder! We remember how much he enjoyed seeing them (and the Indigo Buntings) at the feeders when he visited here. We miss you Papa- With love, Sarah, Jim, Ben & Anna
