Hazel Goetjen Obituary

Hazel "Joan" (Hocking) Goetjen, 94, of Bloomfield, beloved wife of the late Henry John Goetjen, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Born in Bath, England on January 4, 1920, daughter of the late William and Lily (Brooks) Hocking, she immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of one and settled with her family in Bloomfield in what is now Penwood State Park. Joan attended Bloomfield Public Schools including the one room school house on Duncaster Road and graduated from Bloomfield High School with the Class of 1937. After high school, Joan took a position at The Travelers Insurance Company where she worked for 17 years before leaving to raise her children. She was a lifelong active member of the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield where she served in many capacities in the life of the church. Joan also belonged to the Tunxis Grange in Bloomfield for over 75 years where she also displayed one of her many talents as a pianist. Originally aspiring to be a teacher, she later used her talent to organize and guide student projects for Tunxis Junior Grange while raising her own family. In her spare time, she loved tending to her many flower gardens and feeding the birds that frequented her yard. Most of all, she will be remembered for the love and dedication that she had for her family and her home. She leaves three sons, Kent Goetjen and his wife Penny of Simsbury, Scott Goetjen and his wife Sharon of Simsbury, and Craig Goetjen and his wife Deborah of Branchburg, NJ; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" McAndrews and her husband Jay of Summit, NJ; seven grandchildren, Kurt, Austin, Kelsey, Evan, Michael, and Timothy Goetjen, and Phillip McAndrews and his wife Colleen; and four great grandchildren, Sean, Allison, Casey, and Dillon McAndrews. Besides her husband of 32 years, she was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Hocking. Her family will receive friends on Sunday, September 28, 4-7 p.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 29, 1 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield, 10 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield. Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield, 10 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield, CT 06002 or to the Lupus Foundation of America, Connecticut Chapter, 270 Farmington Ave., Suite 362, Farmington, CT 06032.
