D'ANGELO, Helen Mercuri Helen Mercuri D'Angelo of Wallingford, 77, died of cancer and passed into glory on August 6. She was the loving mother of Dr. Diana Jeffery, Sandra Ulbrich, and Dale D'Angelo, and grandmother of Susan, Jonathan and Liliana, Mark, and Weston Ulbrich; and Lauren and Melissa D'Angelo. Helen was the beloved sister of Gloria Mercuri, Joseph Mercuri, Robert Mercuri, and the late Rose Tomassetti. She leaves sons-in-law Frederick C. Ulbrich III, Finis Breckenridge Jeffery, daughter-in-law Lucy D'Angelo, sisters-in-law Alice Mercuri and Jean Mercuri, brothers-in-law Hans Kuchle and Mario D'Angelo, a large extended family and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred D'Angelo. Helen was born in Meriden to the late Immaculate and Pasquale Mercuri, originally of Grotteria (Calabria), Italy. She earned her bachelor and masters degrees at Central Connecticut State College, and taught for 35 years at Rock Hill and Pond Hill elementary schools in Wallingford. She was a 40-year choir member and Sunday school teacher at Grace Baptist Church, once of Meriden. Helen enjoyed photography, book clubs, her teacher's breakfast club, cooking, the UConn Huskies, volunteering at the Masonic Home, attending musical events, Wednesday day trips, her grandchildren's sporting events, and family gatherings. She leaves a legacy of helping those in need and being a superb teacher. The family thanks the medical staff of Yale-New Haven Hospital, Masonicare Hospice, Sister Jilda Marie Chabot of the Franciscan Health Care of Meriden, Janet Kyekyeku of New York, and her former faculty colleagues and book club members for contributing to the quality of the last months of her life. A memorial service will be held at First Church of Christ, Wethersfield, on Sunday, August 16 at 3 p.m. Memorial donations may be given to the Music Ministry of First Church of Christ, Wethersfield; Franciscan Health Care of Meriden; or Masonicare Hospice of Wallingford.

Mrs. D'Angelo was my third grade teacher in 1983 at Pond Hill. She was a sweet woman and I have fond memories of her. I mostly remember her encouraging all of her students to learn poetry. It's one of my favorite memories as an elementary student. Please accept my condolences.

To Sandi, Diana and Dale and all the beautiful grandchildren that Helen was so proud of,
We were all blessed by her smile and energy. I thank her for helping my son go on two missions trips with her blessing of touching lives for God. We all have no doubt where she is right now and knowing that her work here was done and she's probably busy up there too! Our prayers are with you all, it's been a tough year for you. I wish my mom and I could've seen her before she went to heaven, but we will see her someday soon. love, doreen, philip terry and patience

Aunt Helen,
You have been a great inspiration to all of us. When you entered a room your presence commanded a smile from everyone! I have you to thank for my special interest in reading many books, especially those of our Italian Culture, this motivation I will carry on as your legacy to my children as well. We will miss you always . . .

I have known Helen my entire life. She was friends with my great aunt and uncle Mary and Paul Saba and their son John. I remember her and her sisters from when I was a little girl at mother daughter banquets my aunt used to bring me to at their church. It was clear she always loved her family first and foremost. Later it was my great honor and privilege to teach 3rd grade with Helen at Pond Hill. She was a great mentor and friend. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren and loved then dearly. Please accept my sympathy. I will miss her.
