I began dance lessons with Mrs. Hatrt when I was 3 years of age (1975 or so) to around (1981). She was an angel on earth in my opinion. She had a great heart, passion for dance and helping others to learn no matter what walk of life you came from she truly cared about us all. I will always admire and miss her.

May Jane rest in peace. Jane would visit my Mother almost every year in Florida. She was a wonderful lady and frient of my Mom, Maria Elena. Jane would also have her hair done in our Beauty Salon. Iplayed the pianio in the salon and Jane liked my original songs. She was kind enough to put one of my songs to sheet music so I waould be able to have it copywrited. Jane thought my song " Dance Lady" was a great dance song. I never got to speak w/ her personally to thank her and ask if she ever had her students dance to it. My sincere condolence to Jane's family and closest of Friends. I will think of her fondly now & forever.

May Jane rest in peace and may her soul, and all the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Jane was faithful to so many including her community of faith at Saint Lawrence O'Toole Church and its variety show members. She taught a number of us in our adult years to dance for the Church show - such patience, kindness, and good humor - a real humanitarian.

I am so sorry to hear about Jane. I danced with her from the time I was 8 until she stopped doing the cheer shows. She was like a second mother to me. I did not see the notice in the paper and was trying to find out where she was. I wanted to go see her. Lucille Lussier usually calls me when someone passes, from the troupe, but did not call me this time. I am very saddened to find out Jane has passed. She touched so many lives over the years and gave us the love of dance. I became a dance instructor because of the guidance she gave me. I try to instill the same love of dance to my students. I remember the recitals at the Bushnell. We all thought we were special to dance there. I remember taking lessons at Pope Park, and the crepe paper costumes. I remember one time when I was about 8 we had to sit on the floor behind the other group until our time came to dance. Well, it was hot and we got sweaty, and my costume melted. When I got up the back of my costume stayed on the floor. I didn't know it at the time, and everyone started to laugh. I was always perfectionist and never missed a beat. Jane always said the show must go on and it always did. Jane will always be in my heart, I will miss her very much.

Like many others in the Hartford area, I spent many Saturday Mornings at Miss Hart's studio trying to learn to dance. Also, like many others in the Hartford area, my mother also took lessons from Miss Hart when she was "just a kid"!! It is amazing to look at the number of generations that she touched with her knowledge and kindness. The memories of the recitals at the Bushnell in Hartford, the costumes that we thought were so "it" (looking at them now makes me wonder and often laugh!!). She was truly one of the first people that I met who made everyone, regardless of actual dance ability, feel good and that they were doing a wonderful job. She earned her angel wings and definate place in Heaven with all her good works here on Earth. I am also sure that, as many others have said, she is still dancing in heaven, although in heaven she may be dancing with Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly or Gregory Hines or maybe all of them!!! Rest in Peace, Jane.

I was very young when I took dance lessons from Miss Hart. So I remember very little. Miss Hart, just from seeing your pictures, I saw that you were a wonderful person full of life and enthusiasm. Even though I didn't know you very well... I wish I could have. You inspired me to go through life fufilling my biggest deepest dreams. I see the quote that you always used to say: "I'd rather be dancing." Now I feel like fufilling my dream to sing. Thank you for being my inspiration. And when the times comes I will see you again.

I remember taking classes with Miss Jane Hart as a child. There was nothing I couldn’t accomplish in her eyes, she would always push me to new limits. She taught me Ballet, Tap, Jazz and even Gymnastics. Recitals were her favorite, she loved to show off her students. After EVERY show she would always say, “Aren’t they Great”? Whenever I was nervous she would always put me at ease and to face my fears she would make me dance in the front row! She was a great teacher with a BIG heart and she will be in my heart forever!

Miss Jane Hart was the best!!! I began dancing with Miss Hart in 1977 at Broadview Terrace. There I met my Best Friend Michelle when we were both 3 1/2 years old. I took tap, ballet, jazz and gymnastics. It was the best times of my life. I danced for 15 years. I admired Jane for her style and forcing me to do challenging routines. Through her I loved to dance. I teach 2nd grade now and I have taught students at my school those Miss Hart routines that I am surprised I still remember.
I still keep in touch with Kim A. and it always surprised me when she asked "How are Donna and Michelle doing?" The last time I saw her 2 years ago with Michelle we had a great time remembering the good ole' days with Miss Jane Hart. She was and still is one in a million and the best dancer I ever knew whom NEVER would tell us her age :-). Miss Hart you will be truly missed.

Although my dance experience with Jane Hart was very short, her ties with my family were long. My older sister (Patty Shean) spent the most time in her presence. I moved with my family to NY in 1959 but have have made many visits back to my home town. One visit, maybe 10+ years ago, I went with my sister Patty to Jane's Studio. I was amazed to see all the old pictures on the wall, much the same as I remember 50 years ago. I was very young when my sister was taking her lessons from Jane but I can still remember the dance lessons in the park when my mother (Florence Shean) used to help make crape paper costumes. Jane truely was a great inspiration to my sister, as I'm certain so many other young people. Hartford was blessed to have such a giving, inspirational person for the 88 years of her life. God Bless you Jane. And I hope you meet up with my mom to do a shuffle ball change!

Besides my parents, Miss Hart, was my teacher, my mentor and role modle. I am a dance teacher because of her. I took my first lesson from her at age 5 in a basement in the house she first began (before the move to Broadview Terrace). As I waited behind a curtain that seperated the dancing space from the waiting space I could hear her talking. She sounded so kind and beautiful that at that moment I told my Mother I wanted to be a dancing teacher "JUST LIKE HER". And I hope I am - now that I've taught for 53 years.
I took tap, ballet, acrobatic and "toe" dancing. Miss Jane worked with my father Francis Shean and I (along with my brothers and sisters) for many years helping us work on adagio routines. My Dad and Mom, Florence became great friend. At one time my Father was out of work and couldn't pay for lessons so she let me take for free. I taught with her in the park system for each summer from the time I was 10 until I was 17. I was part of her cheer troups and a member of the Hartbeats. I helped all day on Saturdays and it was always a treat when she would send me upstairs to get lunch that her Mother had cooked for her - and I got some , too.
My life is the joy it is because of her. I often think of our recitals at the Bushnell with such fond memories. I try to tell my students about her and I alwasy incllude the fur coat, lepord pants and the rinestone glasses. Jane was one of the truly inspiring people I have ever known. I've missed her presence all these years because of distance. Now she will be closer to my heart.

Jane Hart was truly one of a kind.
When she entered the room you knew you were amongst something extraordinary.
I will always remember her rhinestone glasses, animal print leggings and amazing sense of humor.
She had energy and spunk well into her 70's & 80's that most 30 year olds would envy!
Thank you for your patience while teaching my daughter to dance, thank you for being you Miss Jane and letting me know my frozen drinks were one of your favorite things on this earth!
The pleasure was all mine!

I have just spent time reading through each entry on Ms. Jane's Guest Book and I've been in tears. What a beautiful soul that God blessed so many on earth with. It seems none of us will ever forget the 'statement' she made; physically, with her great glasses, leopard outfits and very chique' look; confidence instiller, caring & loving person that she was, she touched so many lives in a way that has reaped her a reward that she is well deserving of! I remember being shocked the first time I saw her and then immediately smiling for her courage to be an individual! My dear friend who has since left this earth, Mr. East Hartford - 'Tappin' Tom Quigley, would always look forward to participating in her shows. I was his transportation to them, and he even got me up there for his tapping rendition of 'It's A Long Way To Tippararie'! :) God bless Ms. Jane for her endless gifts on earth; lucky & so blessed are those who 'crossed her path'. I think the entry that suggested a March of Dimes walk by the folks who have been in her life would be a wonderful way to honor her!! I wished I'd been her student!

I will never forget Ms. Hart's never-ending, inspiring call to young tapdancers like myself - heel, ball, toe! She was a bright light at the recreation center on Lebanon Street/Tower Avenue, almost 50 years ago! My sister and I benefited greatly from Ms. Hart's generosity. Our memory of her will always be one of big smiles, encouragement and patience.

I have such wonderful memories of Miss Jane and her fabulous recital productions held at The Bushnell. She was also a great mentor to me, sharing advise and giving me so much encouragement when I first opened my dance school. I will truly miss such a warm, wonderful, inspirational, and very talented dance teacher and mentor.

Wow, where do I begin. I spent 18 years with Jane from age 4 up past Highschool and I loved every moment. I have some really fantastic memories. I learned a lot from Jane and I think the most important lesson is to be a service to others. We were forever dancing at benefits such as the March of Dimes and in nursing homes, something few people did then and probably not many do now but it had a major impact on me as I grew up. She taught me responsibility to my fellow man. I have been out of the country for 12 years living in England and I have returned to be with my own mom now and I have made plans to do the March of Dimes walk, and it is important for me to continue Jane's work now that she has left us and if anyone wishes to join me I would be happy for the company, it's only 3 miles and I think it will be a great way to honor Jane. I will call the 'group' the Hartbeats in honor of the chorus line many of us were in. If you want to join me look for that group in a few days when I register.
God must have a really special place in his chorus line of Angels just for her. Miss you.

JANE, YOU WERE ALWAYS SO ELEGANT AND CHARMING AND KIND TO ME. THAT'S WHY I PICKED YOU AS MY CONFIRMATION GODMOTHER. YOU GAVE ME 2 BEAUTIFUL GIFTS: A TARA AND A WHITE RABBIT FUR STOLE. I WAS AROUND 12 THEN, I AM 61 NOW, AND STILL HAVE YOUR GIFTS. YOU TAUGHT ME BALLET, AND WAS ENGAGED TO MY UNCLE JOE. I SURE WISHED YOU HAD MARRIED HIM. YOUR TIME HERE AND GENEROSITY WILL NOT BE FORGOTTON. LOVE LUCY GAUDIANA TINE

As a child I danced with Ms. Jane Hart for about 5 years at the Blue Hills Ave. Studio in Bloomfield, CT, then when I my fist born turned 5 years old I started her with Ms. Hart as my mom did me. My next daughter (born in 2000) plays dress up in my dance costumes (yes I still have those too). Those were the good old days and I still have lots of pictures from all the recitals I was in. Several years ago I saw Ms. Hart in the Friendlys Resturant in West Hartford Center and Ms. Hart said "Well hello Angerine, you still look the same" I was shocked, she remembered me! I will always remember her rhinestones glasses and Mr. Bobby Day. Rest in Eternal Peace Ms. Jane Hart, Connecticut will miss you, you are one of a kind!

Miss Jane Hart … the ultimate Grand Lady of Hartford

As a Hartford native, it was mandatory for every little girl to take and enjoy dance classes with Miss Jane Hart.

Saturdays consisted of two major priorities … first catechism classes at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church. Then off we went down the street to Miss Hart’s dance studio for tap and jazz.

Miss Hart was our city’s first benefactor for developing self-esteem in young girls.

Thank you Miss Hart. I envision that you are dancing with our Lord’s Angels.

Linda (Rioux) Jarm

I too, grew up in Hartford on Mountain Street and was a student of Jane Hart when I was in seventh grade, 1968. I only took dance for one year, but I'll always remember our recital at the Bushnell and we danced to the song, "By the Sea, By the Sea, by the Beautiful Sea"...I loved it. I remember the roller skating nights at Foster Heights Park when the music trailer would roll into the park in the summer and Ms. Hart would come and perform. She was a legend for sure. She "shuffle ball changed" her way into many lives...and will be missed by all.

I think all of us girls who grew up in Charter Oak Terrace in the 50's have very fond memories of tap lessons with the talented & generous Miss Jane Hart. She introduced us to a whole new world of dance, music, costumes, make-up, recitals.... Imagine the dance party she's having now? There certainly is a very special place for her in heaven.

I still remember the only dance lessons that I ever had as a child. They were from Miss Jane Hart at the Mark Twain Playground. 50 years later, I still find myself occaissionally doing the old "shuffle, hop, step" the was the basis of all of our shows along with the crepe paper costumes. God Bless you, Miss Jane Hart and I hope that you and your glamourous Heart shaped sunglasses live on forever in heaven.

Jane Hart was one of a kind. My cousins and I took many years of dancing lessons from her. We were part of her Cheer Group and also "Heartbeats". She was our own little piece of Hollywood. I remember riding to the nursing homes in her Cadillac and thinking she was the most glamorous person I had ever met and I was so lucky.

I'll forever cherish my dancing years and the recitals we had.

Jane, we'll all be listening for the Angels to start their first lessons......tap tap tap step, tap tap tap step.......

I grew up in Charter Oak Terrace and took tap dancing from Jane Hart. That was back around 1950-1951. I do remember that l took tap for about 5 years. I still have the beautiful 8x10 photos that she gave out to the class if we had perfect attendance. I will always remember how wonderful she treated everyone. I loved going to the Bushnell and dancing on stage. Jane is probably dancing in heaven right now. God Bless you.

My name is Quentin Kapke. Jane, my father Bill and my mother Virginia were friends as childred. My aunt Dottie was also a fried of Jane Hart. My sister Barbara and I danced together for years and took lessons from Jane. We were both part of the "cheer Troop". I remeber many places we danced with other students. My sister Barbara passed away last year and I miss her with all my hart. I loved Jane all my life and I saw her as often as I could. I know that there was a special place waiting for her when she died. I LOVE YOU JANE!

I have the fondest of memories taking tap as a young girl from Ms. Hart. My aunt who still resides on Broadview Terrace, just a few doors down from her studio made it feel all that more special. My deepest sympathy to a woman who made such a difference in my life.

Jane Hart turned Mark Twain School's playground into Broadway during the late '50s and 60's for many of us. We truly believed we could dance and thanks to her we still think we can 50 years later!

Jane Hart taught my mom and dad when they were little, and then I took dance lessons from her from the time I could walk until around 1988. She had a special way of bringing friendships together. At my wedding, she made heads turn, with those funky cat glasses and the feathers in her hair. She had such substance to her and influenced so many people. I was inspired by her when I found out she began teaching piano lessons in addition to giving dance lessons! Miss Jane Hart, you will be missed!

A HARTford born Legend: Jane HART

I will always remember “my Auntie Jane” for her inspirational words of encouragement after EVERY dance recital: Sitting right there, glamourously smiling behind her jeweled glasses, sequined dress, and high heels, smack middle of the front row, right next to Gram.

The show would not have been the same without her, and, could not have taken place without her, as she was Aunt Jo-Ann’s mentor and Dance Instructor. I think Jane took so much pride in watching those shows, not because of her own accomplishments, but because of Aunt Jo-Ann’s……she reveled in the aspirations and accomplishments of others. And, continuously shining like the Star that she was, everyone who met her loved her for everything she was: her adorned wardrobe was only heightened by her exhilarating personality, and frank sense of humor.

She truly is the HART of HARTFORD….she always gave back to the community in which she shared her home, heart and gift of dance and piano lessons. We all now have an Angel guiding us …..

"Then come the lights shining on you from above. You are a performer. You forget all you learned, the process of technique, the fear, the pain, you even forget who you are you become one with the music, the lights, indeed one with the dance." ~Shirley Maclaine

"We're fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance." ~Japanese Proverb

"Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels." ~Faith Whittlesey

Here’s to you, Auntie Jane: through your years of giving, you have touched so many lives, you will always have a place on earth……..

Love, hugs, grand battements, and Grand rond de jambe’s forever in your name……

Jane hart was very good to us kids from Charter Oak Terrace. She let us dance and never asked for a penny. My daughter danced with Jane for 6 years and was Little Miss March of Dimes 2 years in a row. She even had me dancing. She will never be forgotten. She had the right name because she was all Heart.

Miss Jane Hart was an icon. My mother hired her to teach dance to seniors in the late 1980's and spoke often of her humor, and her grace. How many pairs of rhinestone glasses do you think she owned? And certainly, nobody wore them any better than Miss Jane! God Bless Her!

I was a student of Jane Harts for many many years. I was a member of the Cheer Troup and traveled to many Hospitals and other places. I was then,the only Baton Twirler, I was eight when I started. To the Hart Family;
As a little girl growing up in Charter Oak Terrace and going to Camp Courant in my youth. She came to us and show us what dreams are made of. I will remember her as twinkle toes because when she dances she takes your breath away and she always looked as she was floating on air. God has received an angel that has opened her wings for everyone to enjoy her life on this earth. Now she will dance forever.

Miss Jane Hart began teaching me dance in 1977 at the VFW in Bloomfield. Then I moved onto the studio on Broadview Terrance where I danced for 15 additional years! Jane was like a member of our family. My mother - Emma Griggs Giel - played for her for more than fifty years. My entire family was involved with her dancing studio. My brother Alan, my sister Jennifer, and I were in her dancing classes and recitals. My father, William B. Griggs, was her announcer. Jane was. and is, a dancing legend in the New England area. She'll be sorely missed. Bill Griggs

She was loved by so many children, especially those of us who were brought up in the projects, whose parents could not afford private lesson in the arts. So many of us were touched by her kindness to us. During the 40's, she was what we and our parents needed, to try to forget the hard times.

It makes me sad to read about Jane Hart's passing. I grew up in the Southend of Hartford and she is a legend. I took dance lessons from her when I was three. She was always a legend dancing in Hartford and well into her 80's still looked wonderful and could dance like no other. Linda Horan
