Janice Wasserman Obituary

Janice Elizabeth Wasserman, 88, of West Hartford peacefully died at home with her family by her side on Thursday, July 2, 2020. She was the beloved wife for 63 years of the late Leonard Wasserman who passed away 6-months ago. Born in London, England on January 1, 1932 to parents Violet Essex and Charles Tucker. After coming to America with her family she graduated from Hollywood High School and UCONN, and received a Master's Degree in education from Boston University. She taught elementary school and was a Weight Watchers lecturer for many years. In retirement, she was an avid painter, singer, poet, tennis player, and Red Sox fan and she volunteered at Aiken Elementary School. She was a long-time member of the Beth El Temple in West Hartford. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her two sons, Alan and William Wasserman (and their spouses Vicki and Victoria), grandsons, David, Scott (and their spouses Katie and Meghan), and Charlie, cherished great grandchildren Violet and Harvey, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Jolyon Tucker, and her sister Jackie Tucker. A celebration of her life will take place once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Funeral services and burial have been held privately. Donations in her memory may be made for breast cancer research, or a charity of your choice. Jan will be forever in our hearts. This evening (Christmas night) I am watching the movie, My Fair Lady and immediately thought of your mother, as I always connect her with the broadway production with Julie Andrews. Your mother was my 3rd grade teacher in Hartford at Sarah J. Rawson School, and she introduced our class to it. She was not yet married, but engaged or nearly so and told us she was to be Mrs. Wasserman. She brought the My Fair Lady album into class, we listened to it, and I learned all the songs. I asked for and received the album as a Christmas gift that year. I am now 73, yet I still remember this part of my class with "Miss Tucker/Mrs. Wasserman." I remember her telling us that her father had some connection with the play, perhaps from when he lived in London. I wish I could remember more about it. I believe she got to meet Julie Andrews. I don't know if any of the family will see this post, but I wanted to share. It's a long time to hold a memory of someone. She made a huge impression on me, was so nice, and very pretty. As a little girl, I was intrigued.

As teachers at Aiken Elementary School it was our privilege to have Jan volunteer in our classroom weekly for many years. She knot only was a super volunteer but a wonderful person. The children strengthened skills designed for her interactions with them. Memories of Jan do continue and will remain with both of us. Our thoughts to al of you. Joyce and Claudia
