Jean Hughes Turek

1922 - 2016

Jean Hughes Turek, age 94, passed away on December 27, 2016 after a long and fun-filled life. She was born on July 10, 1922, to Marion Hubbell Hughes and John Giddings Hughes in Bridgeport, CT. Jean graduated from Bassick High School in Bridgeport and then attended Syracuse University where she graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts. She was an accomplished commercial artist and worked in the Pratt & Whitney Design Department before being hired as the advertising manager for Steiger's Department Store in Hartford. It was in Hartford that she met her husband of 50 plus years, Elton W. Turek, the owner of Veterans Sport Shop on Asylum St, and after marrying they moved to Bloomfield. Raising her family was the first priority but she later worked many years for the town of Bloomfield at the Senior Center and at age 88 decided it was time to finally retire. Jean leaves behind her three children, Louise Cooke and her husband Stephen from Columbia, CT; Martha and her husband Douglas White from Stowe, VT; and Sandy (Elton) Turek from Columbia, CT - along with her cherished grandchildren Tyler, Scott and Hilary Cooke and Evan and Zachary Turek. She was predeceased by her husband, Elton; her two brothers, John and Wilson (Bill) Hughes; and her grandson Dustin Cooke. The family is exceptionally grateful to the wonderful staff at Seabury Retirement Community for the 8 years she lived there and to Kimberly Hall North in Windsor during this past year. A memorial service celebrating Jeans life will be held at 1 PM Thursday, January 12 at the First Congregational Church in Bloomfield, 10 Wintonbury Ave, Bloomfield, CT. Her family will receive friends at a reception at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Jeans memory may be made to The Bloomfield Senior Center, 330 Park Avenue, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
