Joan Gagne Obituary

Joan Paula (Gionfrido) Gagne passed away at home, Friday, August 25, 2023, after a lengthy illness.

Joan was born on November 11, 1932 to Anna and Joseph Gionfrido. She graduated from Hall High School in 1953 and went on to obtain her associate degree from Endicott Junior College in 1955. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard Gagne and they just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Joan was the Matriarch of the Gagne family, spending hours at sporting events, drama productions, and concerts. As a stay-at-home mom, she was always available as the "taxi driver" to transport her children and their friends wherever they needed to go, and she provided a never-ending listening ear.

Family holidays were special occasions. We celebrated with food, laughter, and more often than not, a game of set-back. Joan was one of the founding members of the West Hartford Junior women's club and one of the original members of the Hartford Bridge Club. Joan was passionate about her bridge game, and recently taught her daughter the game, which she played right up until very recently.

She loved animals, contributing to many charities and adopting several abandoned dogs into her home. Joan was passionate about her crossword puzzles, and she was notorious for finishing the Sunday puzzle no matter how long it would take.

Besides her beloved husband Richard, Joan leaves behind her three adoring daughters, Annmarie Gagne (Julie), Lori Gagne Pendleton (Guy) and Diana Gagne Lemay. She was predeceased by her son, Richard T. Gagne Jr. She also leaves her three grandchildren, Noel Gagne Lemay, Shane Gagne Lemay and Stephanie Gagne DeFalco. She was predeceased by her grandson, Joseph Gagne.

Joan embodied love, loyalty, and kindness. Her children recall one of her favorite quotes– "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

She will be missed beyond what words can express.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, August 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave., West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 31, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Church, 110 Main St., Farmington. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Joan's memory to your favorite animal welfare/rescue organization. Online condolences may be made at www.SheehanHilbornBreen.com.

I have so many great memories with Joan and a lot of them were playing cards down the beach. We all had such a good time together and Joan was always the first at the table. I miss those days and will always remember Joan for the good time and the love she has shown me all the years I've known her. God bless her and RIP.

Dear Richard and family, my deepest condolences to all of you. I have many fond memories of your mom trying to teach me to swim at the Sedgewick pool and many picnics at Peoples Forest so very many years ago. Grab tight to all your memories for in the end all we have are our memories. Joan's wings are well earned.
