BYRNE, Hon. John M.
The Honorable John "Jack" M. Byrne, 80, of Cromwell, beloved husband of Patricia (Maltese) Byrne, died Tuesday, (March 12, 2013), at Middlesex Hospice. Jack was born in Hartford, son of the late Thomas and Nora (Quinn) Byrne. He was a graduate of St. Thomas Seminary, Fairfield University and Boston College School of Law. He served as a captain in the Army Reserves. He practiced law from 1957 to 1982 primarily with "Snow" Gene Mumford and provided legal representation as a special public defender for many years until being appointed to the bench by the late Governor William O'Neil in 1982. Jack served as a superior court judge in various jurisdictions authoring over a hundred published decisions before retiring in 2002. He was the youngest elected member and first republican to the Town Council of West Hartford. Jack was devoted to family and friends and was proud of his grandchildren. He had many close friends who stood by him and supported him through his courageous battle with cancer. The family would like to thank Dr. Jessica Clement and her team of oncologists at UConn Medical Center as well as the staff at Middlesex Hospital for their care and compassion. Besides his loving wife Patricia; he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Jerry Lessman of PA, their children, Brittany Tuma of PA and Drew Tuma of VA, Andrew Lessman and Maureen Lessman, both of PA; a brother, Atty. Thomas Byrne and his wife Pamela of FL; step daughters, Atty. Mary Ann and Craig Steuernagel of Cromwell and their son Matthew, and Hon. Susan Connors and Anthony Lopez of Old Lyme; also several cousins, nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his first wife, Annette (DeLisa) Byrne.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Sebastian Church. Friends may call at Biega Funeral Home, Friday from 9-10:30 a.m. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Middlefield.
