John Cosgrove Obituary

John Avery Cosgrove, age 37, beloved son, brother, uncle, friend, passed away quietly at his home on August 23, 2021. He was born in Hartford, CT on May 23, 1984. John attended East Hampton schools, Mooreland Hill School Middle School, graduated from East Hampton High in 2003. John lived for many years in Moodus. From very young childhood, John had an insatiable desire to know all he could about boats, the water and tides, and navigation. He had the advantage of learning at the heels of a master of such things in his beloved grandfather-a crusty old salt named, Jarvis. John, like Jarvis, also had an unquantifiable natural marine ability that few possess. He was an A+ student at the "school" of Portland Boat Works. His absolute favorite days were spent taking the PBW built, "George E Bumstead" Maine-hull, down the river, out into the Sound and many times, on to foggy, rolling waters of Nantucket and "the Block". He also held a 100GT USCG Captain's License and Towing Endorsement. He enjoyed the roar of big trucks and had a passion for truck pulls. As an adult, John established "Nor'easter Marine LLC" and performed marine custom fabrications, repairs and specialty painter. John took satisfaction and pride in completing well, projects that others were reluctant to take on. John leaves his father, Jack Cosgrove, with whom he recently lived, his mother, Jeanie Meloney (Carl), of East Hampton, a sister, Jessica Sponseller (Brian) of Hartsville, SC and their children, John's precious niece, Svea Avery Sponseller and nephew, Ben Sponseller. John was pre-deceased by his grandparents, Irene and John Cosgrove, and Jarvis and Doris Barton, and a cousin, David Antonucci. He also leaves uncles, Paul Barton (Sharon) of Old Lyme, their children, Todd (Jennifer), Tiffanie (Fritz); Greg Barton (Ginny) of West Winfield, NY, their children, Jennifer, Jill, Erin (Marty), Curry (Fred), Megan (Daryl) and Ben (Jen) and their children. He also leaves an aunt, Holly Genevesio (John) of Idaho, and her son, Kevin Antonucci (Deena) and their children. John also leaves behind many good and special life-long friends. His family wishes to thank all of those caregivers, medical professionals and faithful friends and family members who supported John throughout his long battle with Alcoholism. It is a gift that will be cherished through eternity. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Maine Seacoast Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609, in honor of John. John's life will be remembered at a celebration, time and place to be announced. To share memories or express condolences online please visit www.biegafuneralhome.com.

We were saddened to hear of John's death. We remember clearly how much fun Kyle and John had in Middle School. They were good friends. We watched John with delight in "Go Fast" on the river. He racked up quite the resume' on the water.
Please accept our condolences.

Jeannie, from one mother's heart to another I hurt for you. I only knew John as an infant. When he was born I worked with your wonderful mother Doris at the Red Cross and 6 weeks after John was born I had our first son, Michael. You kindly invited us to lunch at your home to celebrate our new babies. You also knew Michael's father Jim from SNET. It seems like a lifetime ago yet just a blink of an eye in perspective to John's lifetime. I cannot imagine your loss but I do offer my deepest sympathy and every possible ounce of strength to help you through this time. Judy Kudrak

Jack,
Michael had stories of John and Jarv helping him get our boat up to Newport. Michael marveled at John´s skill with the boat. I can´t imagine losing your son. John was the apple of Jarv´s eye. I hope you can find comfort in all the good memories you have of John. Wishing you and your family peace at this most difficult time.

Jack, The worst thing that can happen to any parent, totally upside down. I'm so sorry for you and John's mother.
I only met John once. He was a good guy! Dad! buy the Durango! There are only mice in the air cleaner! He was quick witted and analyzed issues in a flash. Good kid.

John came into my life like a Nor'Easter, an apt and fitting name for the company he founded. We met about 8 years ago through a mutual friend and quickly became friends with each other.
John was in an accident a few years back and as a 1st responder, I was at his side in minutes. He never forgot that moment in time and every so often he reminded me of that day that was a turning point in his life. He would message me often to see how things were going with me. I've had my share of hard knocks and he would always tell me he was thinking of me. The almost daily videos he would send of his latest boat project or something that caught his fancy, along with his own sense of wit and humor mixed with colorful language kept me laughing almost non-stop.
Such was John, unapologetically himself but always there for his friends. A heart the size of the universe mixed with his self-deprecating humor, he leaves an equally huge hole in the lives of all who knew him.
Goodbye my friend, I'll see you on the other side.
