John Cummiskey Obituary



John Mark Cummiskey, 70, of New Britain, husband of Sandra (Brentnall) Cummiskey, passed away Wednesday (September 20, 2017) at the Masonicare Center in Wallingford. A native and lifelong New Britain resident, he was son of the late John and Millicent (Shope) Cummiskey. John was a graduate of Pulaski High School, Class of 1965 and was a police officer in the Farmington Police Department for 26 years, retiring in 1995. He later worked as custodian at St. Matthews Lutheran Church and school in New Britain for 14 years. Besides his wife Sandy, he leaves two sons, Michael Cummiskey and his wife Emily of New Britain; and John Cummiskey Jr. in Connecticut; four nieces, four nephews, four grandnieces, a grandnephew and an eagerly awaited granddaughter in January. John was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Thomas Cummiskey; two sisters, Dawn McGowan and Kay Yurko; as well as a nephew, Craig McGowan. Funeral services are Tuesday 7 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 PM until the time of the service at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The New Britain Police Athletic League (PAL), 544 Osgood Avenue, New Britain, CT 06053. New John in 1968 at Wards U of H Electronics school, had lost contact until 1970 when my mom called about a car stuck in front of our house. Who came in a police car to check it out Officer John Cummiskey. He walked up a long driveway and heard my unique laugh. Introduced Sandy to John shortly after and John became a brother in law and renewed friend.

Mike, deepest condolences to you and your family on your loss. Seems like yesterday when your Dad drove you over to Willow Brook Park so that you could start throwing the discus. Your success was due in large part to the support and love of your family (who else gets up that early on Saturday!). I hope that with time your sadness is diminished and only fond memories remain.
