John "Nick" DeMerell

John Nicolls "Nick" DeMerell, formerly of Ivoryton, died at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida, on May 11, 2022 at age 84 of heart failure. He was the son of the late Richard and Erma DeMerell. Born in New York City and raised in Scarsdale, New York, Nick graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He earned a bachelors degree from the University of Chicago and an MBA from Columbia University. He served stateside in the US Army during the Korean conflict. His career was mostly spent in the finance sector and he served one term as a State Representative for Connecticut's 35th district. He cared for his parents during their final years in Essex, Connecticut, where he lived most of his life before moving to Florida. While a somewhat unassuming guy, Nick loved to engage in intellectual banter and had a great sense of humor. He was an avid golfer and loved sports, especially baseball. He cared for his loving wife, Linnea, before her death in 2016. He missed her terribly and moved from Connecticut to Florida in 2020 to live out his remaining years. He is survived by his niece, Robin DeMerell Provey of Washington, Connecticut, and her three children, and nephew, Richard DeMerell of Waterbury, Connecticut. Along with his parents and wife, Nick was predeceased by his brother, Richard DeMerell. He also left behind many friends and neighbors of whom he was very fond and talked about often. As per his wishes, Nick will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered in the ocean in Florida and along the shores of Lake Waramaug where his niece can always find him. He will be missed. In lieu of a memorial service, which Nick adamantly opposed, hold your loved ones close and embrace the small moments just once in his memory.
