John Flannery Obituary

John Leonard Flannery, 89, a beloved resident of The McAuley of West Hartford for the past 10 years died peacefully at home on June 24, 2017. He was born on July 8, 1927 in Boston, MA, son of Kieran and Helen Flannery. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jane Farrell Flannery. He served in the Navy during World War II and graduated from Boston College in 1950. Subsequently, he began his 20-year career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and retired from the position of Director of Bank Supervision. He moved to West Hartford in 1971 to become the President of the State Bank for Savings which was later acquired by People's Bank. John retired from People's as the CFO in 1991 and served as a Board Trustee at People's for many years. John also served as a Trustee on the Board of the University of Saint Joseph and in 1999 received a Doctor Humane Letters from Saint Joseph. He also was a strong supporter of many community organizations in the Hartford area. John's faith was his foundation and legacy to his children. He was an active member of the Church of St. Peter Claver for 45 years. John is survived by three children; Mary Flannery of South Bend, IN; Margaret (David) Catalano of Tewksbury, NJ and John (Tracy) Flannery of Boston, MA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren of whom he was very proud, Kevin and Nora Brackbill; Emily and Sara Catalano and Morgan, Matthew and Timothy Flannery. John is also survived by his sister, Helen Farrell as well eleven nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother Francis X. Flannery. The family thanks all the staff and aides at McAuley who cared for him from the moment he and Jane walked through the door. We are also grateful for the Companions for Living aides who cared for John in his last days in a loving, faithful and unconditional way which will never be forgotten. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, June 27th from 4-7 P.M. at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford. The funeral will be held Wednesday the 28th with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in the Church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant St. West Hartford.
