John Joseph Manfreda, 88, of Windsor, beloved husband to the late Enid M. (Johnson) Manfreda, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, May 8, 2023. John was born November 22, 1934, in Meriden, son to Joseph N. and Agnes (Mullaly) Manfreda.
John grew up in
Wallingford, CT. In Wallingford he attended Holy Trinity grammar school followed by high school at The Choate School for Boys. He graduated from Choate with the Class of 1952. John graduated from Boston College in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in government. In October of 1958, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged from full service in 1960 and remained in the army reserve until 1964. In November 1976 John enlisted in the National Guard and served until August 1985. In April 1995 John retired from the State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation after 23 years of employment. He was a property appraiser for roadway development. During his tenure with the state John was very active with the Connecticut State Employees Association and the International Rights of Way. On a regular basis John would assist blind or disabled colleagues with transportation to and from work, establishing friendships that remained beyond his retirement. John loved to sing and also listen to barbershop music. For many years he was a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and the Silk City Chorus of Manchester. John loved to watch sports and was an enthusiastic Red Sox and Patriots fan. Throughout their 59 years of marriage John and Enid were a very sociable couple. They went on many trips with the groups that John belonged to and made life-long friends. In their later years they very much enjoyed the ice cream socials and neighborhood gatherings with their Wyndemere Community friends.
John is survived by his three children, Kathy Juliano and her husband Tony of Granby, John Manfreda and his wife Lydia of Columbus, OH, and Patrick Manfreda and his wife Carol of
Rochester, NY; his four grandchildren, Elise Juliano of Boston, MA, Krista Dobransky and her husband Brandon of
Gastonia, NC, Christopher Juliano of Boston, MA, and Sean Manfreda of
Rochester, NY; his great-grandson, Thomas Dobransky; his brother, Joseph Manfreda of Phoenix, AZ; his friend and caretaker, Amos Boateng; his companion and therapy dogs, Lainey and Abby. In addition to his wife, John was predeceased by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023, at St. Damien of Molokai Parish- St. Joseph Church, 1747 Poquonock Ave., Windsor. A time of visitation will be held prior to the Mass from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the Carmon Poquonock Funeral Home, 1816 Poquonock Ave., Windsor. Burial with committal prayers will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Windsor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, 103 Vision Way, Bloomfield, CT 06002
