I was so saddened to learn of the passing of Father Stack. I took several classes with Father Stack at St.Joe's in the late 80's/early 90's.
He helped me to learn so much about my own beliefs and I will never forget him. In exlaining his faith about an eternity with God, he would say that he could not believe that he wouldn't see his 2 year old nephew again.
God bless you Father Stack and may you rest in peace with the little guy you clearly loved so much.

On Death and Dying...one of the most powerful classes I experienced at SJC, Fr. Stack taught us about life and it's end as he had learned from his beloved "Greg". As an education major, he reinforced for me the importance of using all of life's experience as a teaching tool. Fr. Stack encouraged us to keep our hearts open and be courageous with our love.He opened the gates of our compassion. Requiem en pace, Padre.

Fr. Stack was one of the inspiring lights at St. Joe's. He not only presented Theology as real, making it live then (and now!) but was always available to discuss other real-world issues. We were often a sheltered group - young women who saw the world from the protection of a homogeneous environment - but he was willing to help us through those glimpses that came through in the troubling 60s. My dorm room was above his living quarters in Mercy Hall, and if I was still rumbling around late at night, he would knock on the heating pipes to indicate that I should quit for the night! Thank you, Fr Stack, for helping me to be the woman I am today! I will always remember you.

Condolences to the Stack family. Many memories of Father Stack at Sacred Heart Church when I was an alter boy. A great speaker, always a good sermon, no snoozers. Always tested our latin to make sure we didn't fake it. Rest in Peace

To the Stack Family,
Please accept my most sincerest condolences for the loss of Father Stack. I attend Saint Joseph College from 2000 to 2003 and had the privilege of taking one of his religion classes. He was a wonderful professor and I remember the first time I met him, I called him Father Stacks and he said, "There is no 's' included!" After we got to know one another I would tease him on occasion and call him Father Stacks and we would both laugh! I hope the life-long memories that all of you have of him and the wonderful memories others share with you about him will be of comfort to all of you now.

Father Stack was one of my favorite teachers in the eighties. He used to say: "OK, the Episcopalian in the back row...what is it now?" He always allowed me to question doctrine, and we became fast friends. I have told people in the intervening years about Father Stack's influence, and that he truly sits on my left shoulder - a constant reminder to do the right thing. He has been the voice of my conscience since we first met. As I write this, I am crying at the thought he is gone.

Hello Stack family - I am the daughter of Betty (Stack) Lauver of Cleveland. I visited the family and Fr. John many years ago while in college. I am heartbroken to hear of his passing. I know he meant the world to many just from having met him twice. I was looking him up today to report Uncle Jimmy Stack's passing on January 5th, as I always thought of the two of them as kindred spirits. They were both very funny and full of love for God and life. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

When I was growing up in Bloomfield, attending Sacred Heart Church, Fr. Stack delivered those sermons that left their mark. A mark that always included his signature dry humor. My deepest sympathy to his nephew, Rev. Donahue, who has inherited his uncle's best qualities, and the entire Stack Family.

Father Stack was my theology professor and chaplain at Saint Joseph College during the late 1960s, right after the closing of Vatican II where he served as adviser to Archbishop O'Brien and peritus to the council. He brought the teachings and spirit of Vatican II back to SJC where he passed them on to his students. Because of Father Stack, many of us remain "Vatican II Catholics" to this day, despite the efforts of church leaders to retrench from the work of the council. His legacy will always remain with those of us who were fortunate enough to experience his many priestly gifts.

Father STack was our college chaplain and Theology professor. He had such a sense of humor with his "Cunegunda" character. He was always so full of knowledge and wit. Our class of 1963 had many stories to tell, I'm sure. May he rest in peace.

Father Stack's theology courses were among the most stimulating and challenging classroom experiences of my four years at SJC; his intellect and wit inspired many of us who went on to become the next generation of teachers. He also presided at my marriage ceremony, one of the first ecumenical weddings in the area, infusing his signature graciousness and humor into the celebratory event. Father Stack collaborated with the co-officiating minister in the genuinely warm and professional manner that characterized his teaching and his campus ministry--and he made a sterling impresson upon the many wedding guests who had never before stepped foot in a Catholic church. He gave freely of his time, his talents, and his full commitment to religious education and the ecumenical movement...and I will remember him with fondness always. My deepest sympathy to the Stack family in your loss.

To the Stack Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I first met Fr. Stack as a fellow student at Crosby High School. In 1960, he provided me and my family with much needed solace at St. Francis Hospital during a very trying time relating to the birth of my youngest son. He was a very good man and an even better priest.
