Jonathan Israel Obituary

Jonathan Laurence Israel, age 62, passed away on February 4, 2022, after valiantly battling cancer for two years. He is survived by his wife, Karen, to whom he was married for forty years, his two daughters, Rebecca and Jenna, and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Lola Israel. Jonathan lived in West Hartford and served his community with distinction as a gastroenterologist for twenty-five years. In 1996, he was a founding partner of CGMA which later became Connecticut GI, the largest Gastroenterologist practice in Connecticut. As a physician, he specialized in liver disease, worked closely with Hartford Hospital's liver transplant center, was fondly remembered for traveling throughout much of Connecticut to treat his patients, and co-edited the book Diseases of the Liver and Bile Ducts. In 1991 he was honored with the receipt of the John C. Leanord Fellowship. Rather than attend Harvard University where he was accepted, Jonathan chose to accept a six-year medical program that combined his university studies at Rensellear Polytechnic Institute with Medical School at Albany Medical College. Jonathan grew up in Queens, NY. In High School, he received all-County recognition for his athletic prowess in Lacrosse, starred on his High School basketball team, and was the starting point guard for RPI during his two years there. Those that knew Jonathan held him in high esteem. He had a clear view of right and wrong and lived his life consistent with those convictions. Always incredibly reliable to his friends and devoted to his family, Jonathan surmounted without complaint obstacles that would leave most in despair. If ever any person has embodied the phrase "salt of the earth", it was Jonathan. The family held a private grave site funeral on February 7. A memorial service in West Hartford will be scheduled in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving donations to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at https://give2.chop.edu or the Colon Cancer Coalition at https://donate.coloncancercoalition.org/memorials/JonathanIsrael.

Jon was an intelligent caring and a genuinely nice guy. We were classmates at Albany Medical College. During the second year upon my return Jon took extra time and effort to console me regarding the passing of my Dad. He truly cared and made the world a better place. He is missed.

I am extremely saddened to learn of Jon's passing. He and I were roommates at RPI when he was a freshman, and I can recall how nonchalant he was about getting 4.0's while also playing on the lacrosse and basketball teams. He was a superstar. My condolences to his family.

I am shocked and saddened to have just learned of Jon´s death. Jon and Karen were neighbors of my late wife Beth and I way back in the eighties in Cherry Hill, NJ when Jon was a GI fellow at Penn. They quickly became our friends and I fondly recall vacationing together to Lancaster, PA. Jon was just the nicest, most genuine guy you could ever know. My sincere condolences to Karen and the girls.

I just found out about Jon´s death. I am devastated for his family, friends and patients. Jon taught me so much when I worked at Ct.GI, and I will always remember him with great fondness and respect for one of the nicest people I will ever meet.

I just learned of Jon's passing. My sympathies to the family. Jon and I were GI fellows together at Penn. Jon was one of the finest people I have ever met, a great friend, and a wonderful doc.

Karen and Girls,
Sympathy and blessings to you on your loss of Jon. Karen , we new each other early in our careers in Albany for several years. Chris and I had many laughs with you and Jon. It sounds like he had a wonderful life although too soon to be taken. Let good memories sustain you.
With thoughts and prayers, Laura Covill

I was heartbroken to hear this news.

As Barbara Krezner has said, we were all part of the Biomed class at RPI and AMC.

I remember the very first day I met Jonathan, and how impressed I was by him.

He was everything you would want in a classmate, a colleague, and a friend. Super smart, charming, with a big heart. His warmth filled the room.

This is a huge loss for our class, and the entire medical community.

My sympathies and prayers go out to his family.

I am broken hearted to learn of Jonathan's illness and death. I was lucky enough to have known him over the six years at RPI and AMC. We shared two years with the large group of BIOMEDS in the house on Morris Ave. I do not know of a kinder and brighter person. I remember when you both got engaged and how happy he was. I always have remembered him with such respect and admiration. Really a wonder man in all ways. Such a loss for all of you. I will keep you in my prayers. Barb Krenzer Syracuse NY

Jon was a truly good man with a strong sense of compassion and kindness. He also has a sense of humor and irreverence that I will always remember him for. He was so proud of Karen and his girls and eager to share their latest exploits. I can't imagine how much pride and joy becoming a grandpa brought to him! He will be greatly missed.

I was shocked and saddened to hear this news! I had the honor knowing Jon for over 20 years and working in the same GI group for the past several years. I´ve truly missed his quick wit and dry sense of humor after he retired. His comedic timing and delivery was never lost on me. He was a brilliant man and a true gentleman! Wishing his family peace during these most difficult days ahead.
