Joseph Liss Obituary

Joseph Paul Liss III died on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Joe was born on October 5, 1964 in Brookline, MA, grew up in West Hartford, CT and made his home in Suffield, CT. After graduating from Northwest Catholic in 1982 and the University of Connecticut in 1986, he used his natural charm and charisma in his sales career where he made lasting friendships throughout the years. Joe was married for 20 years to the love of his life, Carolyn Hennessey Liss. He loved their sons Brian and Owen with his heart and soul. They were not only the greatest gifts in his life, but also his most precious gift to the world he leaves behind. Joe loved his boys for the people they are and the men they will become. As the oldest of the five Liss siblings, Joey was thoughtful, loyal, dependable and courageous, but above all he was adored. Joey had the perfect joke for every occasion. Sometimes it was a "Dad" joke, sometimes it was dry and sometimes it was irreverent, but all were perfectly Joey. A gentle soul with a giant heart and a quiet generosity, Joey had a presence that was larger than life. He was a natural athlete with a passion for hockey and he shared his love of sports and sportsmanship with the many kids he coached throughout the years. Joe will be missed not only by his family, but also by his many lifelong friends. He left indelible footprints on all of our hearts and we are better and more compassionate people for having loved and been loved by him. Joe is survived by his wife Carolyn and their sons Brian and Owen of Suffield, CT; his sisters Eileen of South Boston, MA, Rori Sughrue and her husband Bill of Newtown, CT, Suzanne of San Francisco, CA and his brother Brian and his wife Chris of Granby, CT; his nieces and nephews Julia, Declan, Kiera and Elena Sughrue and Patrick, Brady and Molly Liss. He is also survived by his father Joseph P. Liss Jr. of Columbus, GA; his Aunt and Uncle John and Judy Collins, his Uncle Thomas Gilhooly, and his cousins Patricia, Eileen and MaryKay Gilhooly and Patricia, John and Michael Collins and their beautiful families. Joe was predeceased by his loving mother Kathleen Brady Liss, his Aunt Marie Gilhooly, his cousin Kevin Gilhooly and his maternal and paternal grandparents. His family will receive friends Friday, February 1 from 5-8 pm at The Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 2 at 10:00 am also at The Church of St. Timothy; Burial will follow at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery. I just learned of his death today. I lived two houses down from Joey in West Hartford. We were best friends from our youngest years, and I spent many mischievous hours in the Liss house. Joey and I wandered all around West Hartford and Bishop's Corner together, on bikes and on foot, having fun and driving our respective parents crazy with worry. I knew his whole family, and his mother was kind enough to attend my wedding in Westfield, Massachusetts. I was at the house the day his brother Brian was born. My wife even once rented a room in the Liss house when she was going to school in Hartford.

It has been many years since Joey and I last saw each other. I'm so sad and shocked to learn of his death, especially at such a "young" age.

May the Good Lord be merciful and show Joey His Face for eternity. And may He bless Joey's wife, brother, sisters, wife and sons.

As grains of sand we fight the tide.
Tumbling currents side by side.
Lunar forces pull us apart.
The ebb and flow pound our hearts.
Seaside journey to a warmer day.
On heaven's beach we will play.

Webster's Dictionary description of a Friend-
A person who has a strong liking and a trust in another.

I am so saddened by the news of the passing of My Dear Friend Joe.

The tears have come freely this week and then I harken back to the days I will never forget. The days of the Big East Tournaments, The GHO's, The Belmont & Travers Stakes, the Sundays in Boston, so many concerts. On and on I can go..

What I loved most was our ferocious competitions on the basketball court, ultimate Frisbee & football fields. (Joe's record was vastly better than mine) The only sport we were allowed to be on the same team was the paddle tennis courts. We never lost!!

To the Liss family stay strong like you have always done. Yes, my friend Joe will be missed but he will never be forgotten. The smile, generosity, and the heart of gold will live on forever!

I love you Joe!

Your friend,

Tim Brazel

My heart is broken for your loss, As you said Joe was larger than life and was an awesome Uncle to both my Sons, I remember going through some rough times that Joe literally walked in the room and made me laugh. We've been friends for forty-eight years,
Now I sit silently, eyes welling with tears.

I am broken inside that you had to depart.
I love you Joe, with all my heart.

I don't know what else to say.
I know that you are smiling alongside Kay.

All that we shared, I will surely miss.
A fond farewell to my dear friend, Joe Liss.
