Joseph McDONOUGH Obituary

MCDONOUGH, Joseph Madden Joseph Madden McDonough, son of the late Charles H. and Virginia (Madden) McDonough, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, (November 24, 2010) at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in West Hartford, attended the Edwin Morley School and Kingswood School where he was an avid sports fan and athlete. He graduated from the former Abby School in Simsbury and went on to Nichols College. He eventually left Nichols College to join the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, Joe joined the family Insurance business for a number of years until he was appointed by Governor Ella Grasso as Deputy Commissioner of Consumer Protection. He was a member of the Hartford Golf Club and the Hartford Lions Club. Joe retired to Stonington with his wife Ruth. He continued to keep active working part time at the Gaming Commission for the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation. He leaves his wife, Ruth; his brother, E. Merritt McDonough; his five loving children, Val E. Nichols and his wife, Connie, Lee and his wife, Jean, Jay and his wife, Catrina, Jon McDonough and Mary Jo Walsh and her husband, Robert; beloved grandchildren, Grant, Brad, William, Sam, Wesley, Margo, A.J., Hayden and Joseph; and his former daughter-in-law, Vicki Grant. He was predeceased by his older brother, Charles E. McDonough. A Funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held Saturday, (November 27) at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church 95 Main St. Stonington. Full military honors will follow at the church immediately following mass. Following military honors, there will be a memorial remembrance at the family home at 260 Montauk Ave. Stonington where everyone is welcome. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Vitas Hospice, Charitable Fund, 628 Hebron Ave. Suite 300, Glastonbury, CT. 06033. The Mystic Funeral Home Route 1 Mystic has charge of arrangements.
