Joseph L. O'Brien, 94, of Manchester, beloved husband to the late Helen (Cornell) O'Brien, passed away at home on Thursday, January 21, 2016. Joseph was born in Lynn, Massachusetts to the late Daniel J. and Delia (McGovern) O'Brien on August 9, 1921. He was a graduate of St. Mary High School in West Lynn, Mass, and Burdett College in Boston. He joined the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946 after which he worked for the United States Post Office until joining the Civil Service Commission of the Federal Government as an investigator and later supervising investigator. Joe was a true family man, steadfast and loyal friend and honorable person. He was an avid Red Sox and Notre Dame fan, watching a game with him was always exciting. He had a great sense of humor and could always make the best of any situation. Joe will be missed by his daughter Eileen Meeker and her husband Steve of Newtown, CT; his son Daniel C. O'Brien and his wife Robin of South Windsor; his grandchildren Madison, Joseph and Scott O'Brien, along with Owen and Peri Meeker; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his loving wife, Joseph was predeceased by his siblings Mary O'Brien, Anna O'Brien, and Daniel E. O'Brien. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 25, 2016 directly at St. Francis of Assisi Church at 10 AM, 73 Ellington Rd, South Windsor, CT 06074. Burial will follow at Wapping Cemetery. Friends may call at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, CT on Sunday from 4 to 7pm. We are sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Living 2 doors down was the best 6 years we had. Many good times at Mom and Dad's always the happiest and pleasant. Joe was so happy when Kevin was born I think he wanted to walk him up and down the street. Our best wishes to Dan and Eileen. John & Nancy Hahn

We are all sad to hear about Joe's passing. We have been reminiscing about the old days on Croft Drive and all the great times we had at your house... all the summer cookouts and New Year's Eve Party's. Your family was always so welcoming and fun to be with...you couldn't help but get a warm feeling being with the O'Brien's.. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.
The King Family.
