Kevin Hurst Obituary

Kevin Patrick Hurst, 54, of Kapaa, Hawaii, formerly of Andover, CT passed away on May 13, 2015 from complications due to his paralysis. Kevin was born to James and Patricia Hurst of Andover on June 6, 1960. As a young man, Kevin was an excellent athlete. In 1975, Kevin suffered a spinal cord injury while playing football which in turn left him a quadriplegic for the remainder of his life. He graduated from East Catholic High School in 1978, where he was a member of the Hall of Fame and the National Honor Society. He went on to receive his BA from the University of California Riverside and his MBA from Arizona State University. He also received his CPA and moved to Hawaii where he became a successful businessman. Kevin never let his handicap interfere with his ambitions; he faced his challenges heroically and was an inspiration to all who knew him. Besides his parents, Kevin is survived by his siblings and their spouses Patricia and Robert Bascom of Summerville, South Carolina, Thomas and Shari Hurst of Andover, Luciann and John Norton of Hampton, and Timothy Hurst of Lebanon. He also leaves 26 nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 22nd at 10:00 AM at St. Maurice Roman Catholic Church, 32 Hebron Rd, Bolton, CT 06043 followed by burial in Bolton Center Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to East Catholic High School Kevin Hurst Scholarship. The John F. Tierney Funeral Home, Manchester has care of arrangements. Kevin was a great person. I will never forget
the day he got hurt. I held his hand in the ambulance and he never once complained
Kevin was born into a great family and Jim and Pat never complained but instead supported Kevin
with their faith.

Dear Hurst family,

I hope you see this four years after the event as the feelings are sincere and heartfelt.

I went to UCR and lived in the Lothian dorms while Kevin was a student. I too use a wheelchair.

As you would probably suspect Kevin was always popular at UCR but very shy. That's not to say He wasn't friendly and kind. When I sustained two broken bones my senior year he loaned me daily his shower chair so I could shower.

Fifteen years later my husband and I were on Kuwai and I looked him up! And much to my pleasure he agreed to have dinner. It was fun to meet the man he'd grown into.

I'm sure you miss him. Know you were all mentioned often.

To the Hurst Family,
it is with great sadness that I learned of
Kevin death today. when I remember back to
my years coaching young men he was always at the pinnacle of a true athlete who always gave the full measure of courage and loyalty both on and off the field.
I saw Kevin once since his days of football were over and we spent time with our trips down memory lane. to say that he made me feel great is a understatement.
I am a better man today for knowing him.

Knowing Kevin as we did, I'd say he would scoff at being called a role model or hero. Kevin was above all the most human of humans. He helped our family in many ways, and was a friend to both my husband and myself through the years. From working together at the Rehab Center to doing our taxes and giving financial advice, to understanding the complexities of our "crazy" family members. I will always remember Kevin's wit, his sense of humor, his tenacity, and most of all his heart.
Kevin persevered, through great challenges of body and heart, through a flood that almost killed him, and through situations that were far beneath his intellect. And he did it all with grace.
We were so fortunate to spend time with Kevin, and to get to know his family through our bed and breakfast business.
You've finally got wings now Kevin--fly!

To the Hurst family,
I was so sorry to hear about Kevin's passing. I've known Kevin since 1991, we practiced next door to each other in Kapaa for several years. He was my accountant for 24 years, as well as my friend. I never heard him complain about anything. I know his daily routine just to get to the office would stagger most people. He was truly an amazing man, I feel enriched having known him. I will really miss talking to him. My deepest heartfelt condolences to all of his family. I know you're very proud of him. I'm proud to say he was my friend.
Sincerely,
Dr. Philip Martino

Kevin is, and always will be, a wonderful memory of our years at East Catholic. He definitely was an inspiration to us all. From his football days to after his accident, he never let that hold him back. I always remember the walk-a-thon that we did for him. He brought the entire school together. We hope you all take comfort in knowing that he is at peace now. Kevin will always be in our hearts. ~ Dan & Karen (Duff) Boland

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of this amazing man. I had read this obituary, not knowing your loved one or anyone in the family. I was extremely touched by Kevin's amazing life and the challenges which did not prevent him from living life to the fullest. May Kevin rest in peace, and may his legacy inspire others to never give in to life's challenges.
