Kyle Slocum Obituary

Each morning, he would wake and thank God for another day. At night, he would say how lucky we are. Everywhere in between, he made all of us better people, made us laugh and reminded us of the immense value of our family and friends. He knew he was truly blessed in his life, and we were blessed to have had him in ours. Kyle C. Slocum, 50, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2015 surrounded by family. Kyle was born on December 30, 1964 in Waterbury, and according to his mother was a perfect son (she is entirely unbiased). He was raised in Cheshire and has lived in West Hartford for the past 22 years. He studied at the University of Connecticut to become a Landscape Architect (and a rabid Huskies basketball fan). Kyle was a partner, studio leader, member of the Board of Directors and Landscape Architect at the SLAM Collaborative where he leaves behind his second family, the LA (Landscape Architecture) Studio. In their words¿"Kyle was a great friend and mentor who, by no accident happened to be our boss." His gratitude and respect for the SLAM team are only rivaled by their respect and gratitude for him¿for being a great leader, partner, mentor and someone that could find humor in almost any situation. Kyle was a great husband and father, son, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Toporek (Slocum) and his kids, Cameron and Thatcher; his mom, Geraldine Slocum; his brother, Shaun (wife Nancy); sister, Sharon King; brothers, Kevin (wife Kathy) and Tim. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces (who he adored) and their husbands, wives, partners and children. Kyle is predeceased by his father, Charles Slocum, his brother Kerry and his sister-in-law, Kristen (Tim's wife). Kyle is survived by many incredible friends, including long-time friends Kurt Hekeler, William Berg and William Kenny who shared many youthful adventures. Kyle had a passion for cars (especially fast ones), food (but only good food), music, traveling, vacation with family, landscape architecture, and most of all, family and friends. He loved his kids to infinity and more. Kyle's creativity and humor carried over into all parts of his life. He was a craftsman around the house¿ painting, constructing, creating sculpture, or building projects and pinewood derby cars with his daughter and son. Kyle always had a way to make us smile and laugh through his witty observations, his sense of humor and words of wisdom, such as¿"Slocums aren't quitters," "think before wearing spandex," and "what good is a fast car if you don't drive it fast." We love you and miss you Kyle. Your spirit, your wit and your love will be with us forever. Kyle's wake will take place on Friday, June 26th, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford. The funeral will be on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. A reception will take place following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The National Brain Tumor Society or to an education fund being created for Kyle's children. Sitting in a chair...that doesnt belong to me..
Listening to the news, that is not a world I've known.. or ever wish to see
Watching flecks of light in a wood.. that surrounds that chair that is holding me..
that light moving gracefully, determinately toward the end of another day for those who crave relief
Another anniversary..5 years...can it be?
Those taken, who got it right ..in the moments they were given.. revelled in it, and shared their jubilee?
Just their knowing smile, quiet confidence, calm demeanor and relaxed, and unabased selfless profundity.....
Why those, Lord, do you take....the ones we desparetly need..?
The ones we, for a lifetime, aspire to always be...

I didn't know Kyle, but came across his obituary when doing research. What a beautiful memorial. He sounds like he was an extraordinary person who was loved by many.
My brother-in-law passed away from this aggressive cancer.
If he were alive and met Kyle, I am sure they would have been friends. Maybe they are friends now.
I want to let you know that reading his memorial reminds me to live with gratitude and thank God for each day. Your family was blessed with Kyle and now with the memories that you hold in your hearts. God bless.

It is with sincere regret that I learned of the demise of Kyle. I remember him as a charming little boy who had great fun playing with his cousins, Gary, Terry,(deceased) Gregory, Geoffrey, . I must say I had the greatest admiration for his Dad Charlie, and his Mom, Gerry; they brought their children up to be good citizens and great Americans.I will be donate to the charity for people who are suffering from the same disease that Kyle suffered from. Again My deepest sympathies to all of his family. Sincerly ,Uncle Charlie Black

I just returned from vacation and learned the sad news about Kyle. While I didn't know him well, it was clear from my contact with him during last year's Kids' Lit competition that he was a kind soul. I do know Cameron, though, and we all know what they say about apples and trees. Based on that, I know Kyle was a smart man and a good person. Cameron, Thatcher, and Cindy, you have my deepest sympathy. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Kyle was a wonderful person to not just work with but to be with. I recall in particular his love of Arcadia National Park and Mount Desert Island. His kindness wit and spirit is something I and many others will miss. I am so sorry for your loss. .

I had the privilege of working with Kyle on a new school of medicine of Michigan. He was a great ambassador for SLAM to the rest of the design and project team. He always was happy and excited to invite you into his world of Landscape Architecture. He conveyed how lucky he felt to be working with such great people on interesting projects. It was always good to see Kyle, we are sorry for your loss.

To the Slocum family, there are no words to ease your pain, but to comfort you somehow, know that it was an absolute daily pleasure to work for and know Kyle. His smiling face and "good morning, Brenda" as he passed my desk each morning is forever etched in my mind and heart. We shall forever miss him here within our Slam family and know that we will continue to create work that will carry on his memory and make him proud. God bless
