Leo Tetreault Obituary

TETREAULT, Leo C. Leo Camille ("Cam") Tetreault, 92, the grandson of a Canadian immigrant who went onto a long career in public service including Mayor and Treasurer of the City of Putnam, died August 28, 2009 at his home in Putnam. He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth (Hayes) Tetreault for 66 years. Born in Putnam, he was the son of the late Israel and Rose Alma (LaFlamme) Tetreault. Putnam, hard-hit by the floods of 1955, found a tireless champion in its native son, Cam. As Mayor of the City of Putnam in 1961 and from 1973 to 1977, he spearheaded the development of the park along the river, revitalizing the center of the town. After retirement from John Hancock Insurance Agency, he joined the Connecticut Department of Economic Development and under the Governor O'Neill program for the Comprehensive Reorganization of the Northeast Economic Region, a development plan for Windham County and particularly areas such as Putnam, he began steering industries to the northeast corner of the state and the Putnam Industrial Park. He served as Alderman-At-Large in 1949 and 1953 under Mayor of the City of Putnam, John N. Dempsey. He was a member and Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee of Putnam; Deputy Judge of City Courts/Clerk of Courts, and served as a member of the Judicial Grievance Committee. He was Campaign Manager for John Dempsey for Governor (Governor of CT from 1961 to 1971) and William St. Onge for US Congress (US Representative from 1963 to 1970), both natives of Putnam. He attended St. Mary School, Putnam High School, and Annhurst College. He was a Veteran of the Second World War; a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus and of the Holy Name Society and Chairman of the Diocesan School Board. He served on the Board of Trustees of Mount St. John, Inc., a school for at-risk boys and young men from Connecticut. He leaves two daughters, Patricia Wester, and her husband Robert, of Putnam, and Michelle Tetreault of North Andover, MA; and three grandsons; Matthew, Christopher, and Benjamin. He was predeceased by his brother Leonid and his sisters, Germaine Robitaille, Antoinette Marion, Rachel Tetreault, and Marie Labelle. Leo's family is most grateful to Carol Briere, Linda Beaulac, Leona Fontaine, Erika Johnson, Veronica DiRienzo, and Suzanne Horne, the kind and loving caregivers who assisted with his care. A special note of thanks to Elaine Turner, our Hospice Northeast nurse whose services and support were invaluable during this difficult time. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Leo's family from 5-8 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2009 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam. A gathering will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 Noon in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence St., Putnam. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Condolences may be expressed at LeoTetreault.net. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his memory be sent to St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam, CT 06260, or Hospice of NECT, PO Box 632, Putnam, CT or to Mount St. John, Inc., 135 Kirtland Street, Deep River, CT 06417.

Dear Pat & family,
Your dad was a wonderful neighbor! How many summers he used to mow the back field to give the neighborhood kids someplace to play ball! After his dedication to us kids, allowing us to pass through his yard to get to Hurbutts Pond, plus giving out the greatest Halloween treats on the street, he gave childhood memories that will not be forgotten. We send our deepest sympathies to your entire family.

Pat, Michelle, and family,
Love, Laughter, and more laughter, are the memories that I will take with me when I think of your parents. Both had a love for life! It was a privilage to have served and known them.

Pat and family, Rick and I were so sorry to hear about your dad. He was such a great man and a friend to everyone who knew him. He always had a smile. My fondest memory of him is coming to our home when I was a little girl, to sell insurance, and he would always ask me if I was dropping pebbles in the toilet again because I had so many freckles. He always made me laugh. You were lucky to have such a loving father. May all your memories of him help you to get through this tough time. God Bless

Dear Pat, Bob, Matt & Chris,
Sending my sincerest condolences and my wish for you that you find peace and contentment knowing "dad" is with his Betty again. I remember him fondly and the way he always made me laugh trying to get me to speak French and then blessing himself because I had the misfortune to live in Moosup instead of Putnam! Love, Pat

Dear Pat, Michelle, and Family,,

We (the children in the Lawrence Joseph Marion Family) always called your wonderful Dad 'Uncle Cam'. He was a kind and gentle person who had an exceptional sense of humor that made it pleasant to be around him. I chatted with him after the Requiem Mass for your Mom. I asked him for the names of the 5 boyhood friends who hung around together in Putnam when he was growing up. He quickly said "me, Joe Gaucher, Lawrence Marion, Desire Massicott, and Paul St.Onge". He lived a rich and full life filled with so many achievements. He is with your saintly Mom now as their Souls are together in eternal peace. May God bless all of you at this time of such a great loss. Larry Marion, Farmington, CT

Dear Pat, Michelle and Family- I am so honored to have been a part of your fathers life. I looked up to him as a grandfather. He had a very successful life and many memories to go along with that, which we all known he never got tired telling (and i never got tired of listening). He was such a kind hearted man towards us. He will be missed greatly and i know I can speak for many when I say that he will never be forgotten. He had an amazing family and I know he is forever thankful for what you did for him because we all know it isnt easy. He is so proud of all of you. If there is anything you need anything at all please feel free to let me know. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I love you <3

Uncle Cam was one of two people who I looked up to growing up, the other was my Grandfather Leonid. Although I am currently far away, my thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of our family...I wish I could be there. Uncle Cam lived a rich, full, and most useful life, a life to be admired. If I end up being half the person as Uncle Cam, I too will have lived a full life. When I find the going tough, I think how Uncle Cam or my Grandfather Leonid would have done it. I cannot think of a better legacy to leave than that. Uncle Cam, thank you for your positive influence in my life...you were a special man.

Dear Pat and Michelle,,,I was sad to hear about uncle Leo. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. He had a great life and he and Betty were a great compliment to each other. He was so funny,,,and she didn't let him get away with much!!! They've gone from your loving and unselfish care to the loving embrace of our Lord. I'll treasure all the memories of them both....the last, the meal we all shared,,,and Leo, typical Frenchman, blowing us a kiss good-bye. Au revior Leo!!!! Brigid
