Leonard SCHULMAN Obituary

SCHULMAN, Leonard Harry Leonard Harry Schulman, 85, died peacefully on Thursday, (November 11, 2010), surrounded by his loving family. He was the loyal husband for 59 years of the late Dinah Bell Schulman, who passed away in September of 2009. He was a successful Hartford-area businessman, a man of great integrity and spirit and loved by many throughout the Greater Hartford community. Devoted to his family, his children and grandchildren brought him great satisfaction and joy throughout his life. He was born January 16, 1925 in Hartford, CT to Joseph Schulman and Anna Stein. In 1942, he graduated from Weaver High School in Hartford. He entered the University of Pennsylvania in 1942, and in 1943 he volunteered for the U.S. Navy pre-midshipmen's Officer Training School at the University of Pennsylvania. He then entered midshipmen's school in Chicago, IL, where he graduated as an ensign. He also attended Harvard University where he received training as a communications officer and was assigned to the aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Badoeng Strait stationed in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on June 15, 1946 and returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete his bachelor's degree in 1947. After graduating college, he joined his father in the family business, Art Clothes Shop, a men's clothing and formal wear store on Main Street in downtown Hartford, founded by his father in 1923. After his father's death in 1952, he became owner and manager, expanding the store into Wethersfield, Elmwood, and West Hartford. He retired in 1988. On April 16, 1950, he married Dinah Bell and they remained loyal to each other their entire marriage. He was an outstanding husband and father, and he and Dinah raised three loving children in West Hartford, where they lived from 1950 until September 2009. An avid lover of golf, tennis, and his wife's cooking; he was a founding member of Cliffside Country Club in Simsbury and longtime member of Rockledge Country Club in West Hartford. He was also a member of the Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford for many years, which provided him with great companionship and was his home away from home in his later years. He derived great enjoyment and support from his many friends and experiences there. He is survived by his three devoted sons, Eric Schulman and his wife Catherine of Avon; Joel Schulman and his wife Kian of Malibu, CA; and Peter Schulman of Philadelphia, PA; two treasured grandchildren, Allison and Andrew Schulman of Avon; a sister, Rhoda Parskey of Farmington; a brother, Philip Schulman, of West Hartford; three nieces, Margaret, Leslie, and Suzanne; and two nephews, Jeffrey and Joseph. A funeral service will be held at the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford, on Sunday, (November 14), at 1:30 p.m. with Rabbi David Small and Cantor Sanford Cohn officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, 15 Wolcott Road in East Granby, 06026, adjacent to the Simsbury Airport. His family would like to extend thanks for the care and support provided by the McLean Hospice team to Leonard and his wife, Dinah, during the last months of Dinah's life. His family would also like to extend a very special thanks to the doctors, nurses, hospice and support staff at Hartford Hospital for the care provided to Leonard to keep him comfortable in his final days and for providing guidance, comfort, and support to his family. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to the McLean Foundation/Hospice Department and mail to: McLean, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, 06070 or to the Emanuel Synagogue. To Eric, Joel, Peter and family, my condolences on your loss. I have fond memories of Lenny, particularly that he was quick to smile and make others smile as well. I so appreciated that he and Eric came over to see us after my dad (Eddy Hyman) passed away in March 2008. My thoughts are with you.

On behalf of the staff and members of the Men's Spa, and the many Fitness staff who knew Leonard at the JCC, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies.
Lenny was a bright spot in our days, and could make anyone's burden a little lighter with his wit and charm. We will miss his cheerful smile and friendship.
