Lyn Sala Obituary

Lyn Fairchild Sala, 59, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019 in Chevy Chase, MD. She was the daughter of Peter Jeffrey and Susan Fairchild Sala. Raised in Newington, CT, she graduated from Newington High School and went on to Allegheny College, Meadville, PA, earning a Bachelor's of Science degree in Economics. For more than 35 years, Lyn resided in the DC area, first in Kensington, MD, then Chevy Chase. She had a successful career in mortgage banking including 25 years at Freddie Mac, retiring as Senior Contracting Director. Lyn and her family enjoyed 40 summers on Great Diamond Island in Portland, Maine; first as renters then settling in as part of the fabric of the GDI Community. Great Diamond Island was truly her second home. She always looked forward to her time on the Island, especially "Lyn's Lobster Roll Picnic on the Beach," dance parties at "The Shack" and finding treasures in the antique shops along the Maine Coast. She always found a way to bring style and class into the lives of her family and friends, with her trademark brooches to accent her look, introducing a pop of color into wardrobe and home décor. Her love of life included exploring art museums, traveling to England, a safari in South Africa, happy hour with friends at The Moose and her weekly trivia night. Lyn worked hard but played even harder. Her holiday celebrations were legendary. Fourth of July decorations adorned the house in Maine. Special turkey plates lined her Thanksgiving table in MD, while guests sang the Tom Turkey song. She popped her favorite champagne with family in CT to celebrate Christmas and with friends to ring in the New Year in Pittsburgh. In addition to her parents, Lyn is survived by her brother and sisters: Christopher Sala of Vail, CO, Jennifer Smith and husband Marc and Katherine Sala all of Newington; her aunt Joan Sala; her niece and nephew, Emma Smith and Erik Smith, of Newington as well. Funeral services for Lyn will begin on Weds. Oct. 2, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. from the Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave, Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington. Family and friends may call on Tuesday, Oct. 1 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Newington Memorial. Lyn's family would like to extend a special thanks to friends and the staff at John Hopkins Suburban Hospital who helped her during her illness. Special thanks also to Gayle Mooney for the extraordinary way she was there for our Lyn this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lyn's name to Diamond Island Association, PO Box 7804, Portland, ME. 04112, Allegheny College, 520 N. Lyn and I worked together at Freddie Mac. Just head of her passing. I always enjoyed working with her and her laugh. Very sad to hear the news.
