Marc Nodden Obituary

NODDEN, Marc Marc Nodden, whose varied careers with yachts and computers never defined him as much as the words "husband and father," died suddenly Friday, (September 22, 2006) at 48, leaving too soon his beloved wife, Mary, and son, Alex. Old Lyme and Essex were Marc's home for most of his life, although he was born in Colorado, went to college in Pennsylvania, lived briefly in Florida, and traveled throughout the Atlantic Ocean. In recent years, he also enjoyed weekends and vacations in New Hampton and Meredith, NH. Samuel Johnson, the 18th-century writer, said that a man who loves life at sea "is not fit to live on land," but Marc ran that idea aground. Love for Mary and Alex rooted him deeply at home, and he was happiest beside them – working on another project at home, playing in the yard, or relaxing at their favorite Sunday breakfast spot. Marc and Mary celebrated their silver anniversary this month. His absence will be felt in so many daily moments, even as his presence remains in countless memories. In addition to Mary, Alex, and a large family of in-laws who loved his company, Marc is survived by brother Peter Nodden and sisters Kim Ladue, Kelly Gilliard, and Robin Courtney. He was preceded in death by his parents, Armond A. Nodden and Joyce Stevenson. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 26th at Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St. Centerbrook, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church located at 12 Prospect St., Essex. Interment to follow at Duck River Cemetery in Old Lyme. Contributions in Marc's memory may be made to the Alex Nodden Educational Fund, c/o Merrill Lynch, City Place II, 185 Asylum St. Hartford, 06103

My prayers and condolences to you and Alex on the anniversary of Marc´s passing.

Marc was my good friend and coworker at Vantage Computer Systems. We worked together on a number of projects. One we were both proud of was when we were assigned to do a software release upgrade with Marc as the manager and me as the lead technician. We were given a group of fresh college graduates to use as our team for the project. They had no Vantage-one experience and most of our peers at the company thought it could NOT be done. And with a lot of hard work we succeeded.

I loved hearing Marc´s stories of his sea faring adventures. He had wanted to start a business in Vermont or New Hampshire and wanted me to partner with him. He was always full of ideas. We stayed in touch even after we went on to different project and after he left Vantage. We sometimes met for lunch in Hartford to catch up and talk about about our work. One year we ran into each other in Texas and on the weekend we headed to Galveston to see area and the shrimp boats. On the road to Galveston we got into a friendly argument about the height of the water towers we saw along the way. So now when I see a water tower I remember my good friend Marc.

Mary and Alex,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss ... and of the loss to our Nodden family as a clan. Although Marc was older than many of us cousins, his arrival or appearance at a family function was always cause for inspiration and awe. His dignity, charm, intelligence and sincerity set a standard that will always be honored but never matched. I regret that my Mary and I are so far away from you at this time, but we hold you both in our thoughts and hearts. May peace be yours.

From the Rime of the Ancient Mariner:

'Still as a slave before his lord,
The ocean hath no blast;
His great bright eye most silently
Up to the Moon is cast--

If he may know which way to go;
For she guides him smooth or grim.
See, brother, see! how graciously
She looketh down on him.'

Our deepest sympathies - The Leahy Family.

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

My love and firm support
Kim
