Margaret Winters Obituary

Margaret (Neill) Winters, 91, of Avon, died Friday, October 28, 2022, at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington. She was born April 6, 1931, in Cold Springs, NY and later moved to Miami, FL. After the death of her parents, Maggie was raised by John and Evelyn Gilbert in Miami. Prior to moving to Avon over 30 years ago, "Peggy" had lived in Seattle, WA, New York City, and Branford. She had attended Georgia State College for Women and the University of Miami. She was briefly a kindergarten teacher, owned and operated a Retail clothing store, and was the Regional Manager for D & L for many years prior to her retirement. Peggy was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford where she had managed the Thrift Shop for several years. She was an active and longtime resident of Farmington Woods, having served as Treasurer of the Connect Group and was a member of the Woman's Club. Maggie enjoyed volunteer work and was a member of the International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She loved all the social activities at Farmington Woods and was a fan of UCONN Women's Basketball. Her interests were varied: traveling extensively, attending plays and concerts, and visiting museums. Most of all, Maggie adored spending time with family and friends. Aunt Maggie is survived by her nieces, Pam Stenback and husband Jeff of Miami, FL, Joanna Nifong and husband Jeff of High Point, NC, Karen Gilbert of Gainesville, FL; and nephews Mike Konopko and wife Lisa of Jacksonville, FL, John Gilbert III of Tavernier, FL as well as many great nieces and great nephews who lovingly knew her as "Piglet". In addition to her parents and the Gilberts, she was predeceased by her brother, John Gilbert and his wife Virginia "Gini"; sister, E. Joan Konopko and her husband Joe; and ex-husband Clay Winters. The family would like to thank Maggie's friends and the staff of the Residence at Brookside in Avon for their support and excellent care during the last few months. Services will be private. Donations in Maggie's memory may be made to Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105 or to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111. The Vincent Funeral Home of Canton is caring for the arrangements. Please visit Maggie's Book of Memories at www.vincentfuneralhome.com for online tributes. Peggy was the force behind the AHCC thrift shop. I had the pleasure of volunteering with her there for many years. She ran a tight ship, still She made being there fun. Peggy was a great gal & worked hard for the church she loved. My sympathy to her family

I will miss Miss Peggy so much! That's what we used to call her in the AHCC Thrift Shop! She must have run that shop for at least 20 years & touched the lives of many people there. She was my good friend & mentor & I wish her the very best in Heaven!

I extend to all friends and loved ones my sincere condolences. Peg and I were FW girlfriends years ago and she was the very best and always fair in her thinking. Bless you Peg, peace and love, too.
