Marion Marsh Obituary

Marion Carhart Marsh, 77, of Lenox, MA, a volunteer community health organizer, died Thanksgiving Day (November 28, 2002) at home in Kimball Farm. Mrs. Marsh who was the widow of H. Newman Marsh Jr. was born in Tuxedo Park, NY, on Jan. 24, 1925, to Amory Sibley Carhart and Isadora Bliss Carhart. She graduated from The Highland School on Warrenton, VA., and from the Spence School on New York City, NY. She was a certified alcohol counselor, earning a degree from Westfield State College. Mrs. Marsh married Newman Marsh on Dec. 28, 1946, in Warrenton, VA. In 1951, they moved from Washington, D.C., to Millstream Farm in New Hartford. In 1963, the Marshes with their five children moved to New Cannan. Eventually, they divided their time between New York City, NY, and Misty Mountain Farm in Chester, MA. Mrs. Marsh helped establish the Huntington Health Center and was a founding member of the Miniature Theatre of Chester, MA. She was a trained SHINE volunteer, helping senior citizens with health care benefits and a choir member for many years at Episcopal churches in Connecticut. In 1973, Mrs. Marsh and her husband, Newman, established Misty Mountain on Chester Hill in MA. There they raised Haflinger horses ad Highlander cattle, hosted the annual Chester Hill Association Harvest Fest, and were active members of the Chester community. Recently, Mrs. Marsh was a long-term member of the First Congregational Church of Chester. She enjoyed making intricate needlepoint creations for her eight grandchildren, and family members. She also enjoyed playing bridge, travel, and wide circle of friends. Mrs. Marsh's active life included riding horses, tennis and walking, preferably on empty Nova Scotia beaches with her dog. Survivors include three sons, Harold Newman Marsh III of Sonoma and San Francisco, CA, Addison Bliss Marsh of Suffield, Frederick Dennis Marsh of Westfield, MA; and two daughters, Mandana Marsh Szkotak of Richmond, VA, and Meredith Marsh Tiedemann of New Hartford; along with eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements include calling hours on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 6-8 p.m. at the O'Brien Hilltown Funeral Home in Huntington. A funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Clare Overlander on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Chester, Skyline Trail. Memorial donations may be made to the Huntington Health Center, Route 20, Huntington, MA 01050 or to the First Congregational Church of Chester, Skyline Trail, Chester, MA 01011.
