Marjorie Woodward Obituary

March 5, 2021 Marjorie J. (Maxwell) Woodward, 99, died peacefully at home in Augusta Maine, with her devoted niece Shari by her side. Marjorie (Marge) was born on May 27, 1921, to Sanger E. and Neva (Cory) Maxwell in Caribou ME, where she lived until graduating from Caribou High School in 1938. Following high school she moved to CT to work, before enlisting into the Women's Army Corps (WAC's) On March 8, 1945, Marge was one of 20 WAC's chosen to greet the 275 arriving heroes of Bataan, Philippines (Bataan Death March), on the pier at San Fransisco Port of Embarkation. The WAC's were commissioned to hand deliver letters from the President to the POW's, and be the first to welcome them home. Marge was honored by the Bataan Legacy Organization in San Fransisco CA for her participation in this historic event. Following her discharge, Marge returned to CT, where she met James (Woody) Woodward, an employee at The Hartford Insurance Group and fellow veteran with the Coast Guard. The two were married on June 22, 1946, living in Dallas TX, San Fransisco CA and eventually in Avon CT. The couple retired to Palm City FL, and in recent years, Marge moved back to her home state of Maine. Marge worked as a phone operator and real estate agent, was a member of the Columbiettes and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed college football, golfing and traveling, collected porcelain dolls, she loved crafting, reading and puzzles. In her later years you would most often find her at the table with a black coffee, a fig bar, and a tabloid magazine! While residing in Maine, Marge was blessed to have the companionship of her nieces and their families (For which we are forever grateful) Marjorie was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, James, her siblings, Lloyd Maxwell, Cora Pangburn and Claudine Olmstead, all of Maine, and a great grandson, Gage Woodward of NC. Marjorie is survived by her son, James M. Woodward and wife Michele, of New Hartford CT. Her grandchildren, Toni Metcalf(Jonathan) of TN, Jesse Woodward(Misty) of NC, James Woodward(Jessica) of Cheshire CT and Jacob Woodward(Kayla) of Winsted CT. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Kamren, Weston, Jack and Scarlett Woodward, Dilyn Hensley and Taryn Metcalf, as well as her many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
