BERG, Marshall R. Marshall Rice Berg, 81, of West Springfield, MA, formerly of East Hartland, beloved husband of Carol (Welch) Calvanese Berg, died Sunday (June 26, 2005) at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Southington, son of the late Thomas and Helen (Grant) Berg, he lived in East Hartland from 1950-1983 and has lived in West Springfield for the past 22 years. Marshall served in the US Marine Corps., as a Corporal during WW II in the Pacific Theater. Before his retirement ins 1986, he was employed for 30 years at Nutmeg Building Supply Corp. in Enfield and also worked at the Eastern States Exposition from 1994-2004. He was a member of VFW Post #5847 in Granby and a life member of the American Legion. He was a life member of the 6th Marine Division Association and The Fifteenth Marines. Marshall was a member of Elm-Belcher Lodge A.F.&A.M., Melha Temple Shrine and the Vintage Auto Unit. He was a former member and past Chief of the East Hartland Volunteer Fire Dept., and an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall "Skip" and Darlene Berg of Granby, William G. and Maryann Berg of Avon, James and Wendy Berg of Riverton; three daughters, Sharon E. Burns of East Hartland, Jane H. Provencher of Granville, MA, Sally Ann and Henry Holcomb, III of East Hartland; a step-son, Joseph and his wife Maria Calvanese of Ludlow, MA and a Step-daughter, Kathy and her husband Glen Zeh of West Springfield, MA; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Grady Berg of Lubbock, TX and his faithful companion, Shadow. Marshall was predeceased by his first wife, Mary (Percy) Berg; a son Arthur Lee Berg and a step-daughter, Donna Sheil. Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 29, 11 a.m. at the First Church in Hartland, Congregational, East Hartland Center, with the Rev. Kurt Satherlie officiating. Burial with Military honors will be in East Hartland Cemetery. His family will receive friends Tuesday from 5-9 p.m. at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St. (RT 10&202), Granby. A Masonic service will be held on Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104 or The East Hartland Volunteer Fire Dept., South Road, East Hartland, CT 06027 or the Baystate VNA and Hospice, PO Box 9058, Springfield, MA 01102-9058.
