Matthew DeSimone Obituary

DESIMONE, Sr., Matthew J. Matthew J. DeSimone, Sr., 65, of Newington, left us peacefully on Thursday (December 10, 2009). The beloved husband of 40 years to Donna (Janes) DeSimone, Matt will be dearly missed to those who knew him as father, grandfather, father-in-law, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend. Born in Hartford to the late Matthew E. DeSimone and Laura (Silvestri) DeSimone, Matt has been a Newington resident for the past 37 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and retired after 45 years from Connecticut Natural Gas as a service mechanic. He loved working for CNG where he was known as Matty to his "extended family" there. Matt was dedicated to his family and he was always there for anyone who needed him. He enjoyed coaching many successful little league teams as well as teaching his boys how to fish and shoot, and more recently they enjoyed motorcycle rides together. A motorcycle enthusiast, Matt was also a life member of the Hartford Gun Club and the N.R.A., the Randall Knife Society, and the CT Fly-fisherman's Association. Everyone who knew Matt loved him for his genuine loving and caring nature, and his keen wit. His unique delivery could make even a bad joke funny and spending time with him was always a joyful experience. In addition to his loving wife and mother, Matt leaves his two sons, Matthew J. DeSimone, Jr. of East Berlin, and David R. DeSimone and his wife Kate of East Granby; his brothers, Gary DeSimone, and Ronald DeSimone and his wife Michele of Rocky Hill; and the light of his life, his cherished granddaughter, Ella Grace DeSimone who knew him as Poppi; his uncle John DeSimone and his wife Alice of Old Saybrook; his aunts, Anne Laurinaitis and Dorothy Silvestri of Newington, and Ada Salerni of New Britain; his nephews, Jamie DeSimone of Rocky Hill, Kenneth Johnson and his wife Jennifer; his great-niece and nephew Kelsey and Dalton Johnson of Vero Beach, FL; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dale and Jim Hendry also of Vero Beach, FL; and many dear, loving, cousins and friends. Matt's family would like to thank all of Matt's neighbors and friends for all their love and support, the staff at Yale-New Haven Hospital for their loving and devoted care especially Medical Oncology – 9W, Neurosurgery ICU, and Medical 5-7, and the most compassionate staff at Masonicare for their wonderful care and support. Matt's funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, December 14, from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church in Newington. Interment will take place in West Meadow Cemetery in Newington immediately following the Mass. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at Newington Memorial. Memorial donations may be made to Yale Cancer Center, Melanoma Clinic, 333 Cedar Street, New Haven, CT 06510-3206 or Masonicare Home Health and Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza, East Hartford, CT 06108. Not sure what to say?

Dear family of Matt's
I am late signing this. Matt died on my birthday and I lost my nephew a week later in Ohio. Nephew Ryan served in the Navy in the Persian Gulf on the USS Enterprise and was 36 years old when he died.
I served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 4 years, during the Vietnam Conflict most likely when Matt did.
My dad, Hugo knew Matt and I'm sure I met him in past years. I wish I had known him better, we would have been competing with each other with jokes. My heart goes out to all of you.
I can see his sincereness in his eyes.
I'm so sorry for the loss of this great man.

Donna, Matthew and David,
There are no words to express the loss we all feel at Matt's passing. He was our wonderful friend. We cherish our years on Raynel Road and especially our extended family just across the street. Matt's sense of humor and smile would always put a smile on our faces. Our Chanukkah parties were always made more special just by Matt being there and the best part was when just a few of us were left with Matt holding court in our living room with his "myriad of jolks and Gas Company stories".

There wasn't a day that had gone by since Matt took sick that all of you weren't in our thoughts and prayers. He is finally painfree and at peace and we will miss him, more than words can say.

All our love,
Karen and Lenny

Donna, Matthew and Dave,

I am so sorry for Matt's passing. I know he is no longer suffering, but cannot believe he's gone. I truly wish I could be there to support you all. We have always thought of you as more than just neighbors and friends. You are family. I really don't have a memory of the house in CT that doesn't have Matt outside cutting the grass, sitting in the garage and having a great conversation with us or other neighbors, or Matt riding around on his motorcycles. Matt and I always had great conversations of history, wars and movies. I will forever miss him. I am so saddened and I am thinking of you all.

Love to you all,
Marci

Ron,

I haven't seen your brother since about 1964, but I remember him vividly, especially his sense of humor. The comment in his obituary about "his unique delivery..." is right on! Forty five years later, I can still remember his witty style and ability to always make me laugh. And throughout all these years, I have never heard a Beach Boys car song without thinking of Matt, especially "409." God bless you all during this difficult time. Tom

Dear Donna, Matt, Dave,

Words cannot say how sad we are. Matt was such a wonderful man. I remember growing up across the street and just seeing him either sitting in the yard, or yelling a conversation from one side of the street to ours. He was a joy to be around, always made you smile. He was a joy to be around and he will severely be missed. You all have always been a big part of my family. Living next door for 35+ years we could not have asked for better neighbors. When ever we needed anything you all were there, Matt, always came by to help with the heat if there ever was a problem and it did not matter the time of day or night he would be there to assist. Not only was he a friend, but we considered him and all of you family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. If you need anything I am always a phone call away.

All My Love,

Sam
