Michael Noheimer Obituary

NOHEIMER, Michael Michael J. Noheimer, 82, of Willington, passed away on Tuesday, (January 29, 2008) at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. He was born on June 8, 1925 in Willimantic, the first son of Michael and Margaret Noheimer. After graduation from Windham High School, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Dennis, a destroyer escort, in the Pacific for 2 1/2 years. His recount of many major battles were captivating, including the battle of the Philippine Sea when the U.S.S. Dennis was hit four times. Michael and 185 other Bluejackets docked in San Diego on November 6, 1945, to become civilians, leaving the ship that wrote history. He attended the University of Connecticut for 3 1/2 years. Due to his father's untimely death, he joined his brother Walter to run Noheimer's Market in Willimantic. He was a member of the Willimantic Country Club. The sport of golf appealed to his competitive nature where many friendships and activities evolved; including Treasurer of the Willimantic Country Club and President of the Senior Golfing Group in Willington. Michael's literary curiosity was satisfied by indulging in historical novels about the Civil War, World War I and World War II. In his own right, he was a warrior. This was evident during the last months of his life. His endearing persona has touched many lives. He was predeceased by his brother, Walter. He is survived by his wife, Alice, of 51 years; a sister, Doris Johnson of Willimantic and several nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Windham Community Hospital Foundation, 112 Mansfield Avenue, Willimantic, CT 06226 .
