Milan Keser Obituary

The world is diminished after the loss of Milan Keser. Over the last few days, it has become apparent that he was many things to many people who will miss him deeply. To his family he was "the world's best grandpa," a father, a husband, a brother, an uncle. There was never any doubt how much he loved his family, he told us often and showed us always. In the soccer community, "Mr. Keser" was a player, a coach, a club president, a bus driver, a groundskeeper, a friend. He was a fierce advocate for youth soccer - always putting the kids first. Professionally, "Dr. Keser" was a scientist, a leader, a scholar, a professor. He unflaggingly supported the people that worked for and with him. Milan was fiercely loyal and lived according to his own moral code. Milan grew up in war torn Yugoslavia, surviving a concentration camp as a child. Arriving in this country at the age of nineteen; he had no money and could only speak a few words of English. Always one to approach a challenge head-on, he joined the Air Force and then put himself through school. He received a B.S from Westfield State College, a M.Ed. in Science Education, M.S. in Botany and a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from the University of Maine. Milan headed the environmental lab at Millstone Nuclear Power Station for 38 years and was elected into the Connecticut Academy of Scientists and Engineers in 2012. He was a part of publishing numerous scientific papers. He was an adjunct professor and then an associated professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut, Avery Point. He also served as a member of the Connecticut Institute of Water Resources (CTIWR) and the Long Island Sound Study Science and Technical Advisory Committee. He was one of the founding members of both the East Lyme Soccer Club and the Southeast Soccer Club, serving for decades as the president of each. He also was the longest serving board member of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association representing the Southeast District. In 2009, he was inducted into CT. Soccer Hall of Fame. He coached many teams over the last 40 years, but he always had a special place in his heart for his "girls" - the East Lyme High School women's soccer team, which he was instrumental in creating and coached for 11 years. He played soccer at Westfield State College and was Captain of the team for 4 years. He was inducted into the inaugural class of Westfield State College Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994. He was recognized for his soccer achievements by the town of East Lyme, the Southeast District, University of Connecticut Men's Soccer program and the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association. He was particular proud of the Milan Keser soccer field at Bridebrook. At his death, he was a member of East Lyme Parks and Recreation Commission for 14 years. He was the founding member and President of both the SE Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame and the East Lyme Sports Hall of Fame. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 32 years Karen; his children Sonny and wife Beth, Adam and wife Dawn, and Aleksander and fiancé Natalie; his brothers Mark and his children Christine, Mark (Susanne) and Keith; and Dean and wife Diane and their children Paul, Steven (Caitlin), Stacy; and his granddaughters, the lights of his life, Jessica, Samantha, Abigail, Ella, and Elyse. He was predeceased by his parents Cvijan Keser, Stana Rasich Keser, sister Anka, brother Branko and his sister-in-law Mary Keser. He leaves us after living life well for 79 years. So many of us are better off for having known him. Calling hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Funeral Home service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 18. Interment will follow in East Lyme Cemetery. I worked with Milan for over 10 years. He was a very special man. I didn't always agree with him ...but I did most of the time and always appreciated his av. And, I always appreciated availability, sincerity and, I believe honesty.

He was a man who truly wanted to improve the world and the human condition. He did that through the sciences and his true passion ,,,soccer.

I am proud to have known Milan and consider him a friend of mine ,,,and humanity.

I hope to see you again someday Dr. Keser.

I now live in Costa Rica ,,,an immigrant as was Milan.

My sincere condolences to Milan's family and friends.

Very sorry to hear of Milan's passing. He was a gentleman in the Soccer boardroom and always showed how much he loved the kids.

I was particularly impressed by his care for the TOPSoccer athletes. He has raised the bar for all of us.

A kind man, a brilliant person, a gentle soul.

My sincere condolences.

I first knew Milan as my soccer coach in the summer of 1979. He took a team that had a hard time winning a game and made us into champions. He had faith in his players and inspired us to be great. He then asked us to give back to the game of soccer by becoming coaches and several of us did just that. He was a great coach, a great inspiration and a great American.

I first met Milan when working with him on parts of the Connecticut River Ecological Study (revisited). I had many interactions with him while doing other scientific work related to the Niantic River, and the Long Island Sound Study Science and Technical Advisory Committee. I particularly always looked forward to discussions we would have on the ferry ride to Long Island for those meetings. No matter what, he would always want to know what I was doing and had a genuine interest in the work of all of his colleagues. As Carmela pointed out, we will miss his unique Scientific perspective and demeanor toward others.

Milan was an amazing individual who had a heart of gold and the spirit of a tiger. I had the pleasure of working with Milan for many years. He had an uncanny nack of drawing you in to help. I met milan at a soccer match for my young daughters over 20 years ago Before I knew it I was coaching at various levels had three coaching licenses , helping at the club and district level, refereeing matches setting up snack bars to help pay for uniforms and finally helping him coach the girls high school team

Milan always had the kids and family as his priority. Milan helped countless numbers of girls grow and learn more than soccer skills. He instilled so many important values that they took forward even though at the time they may not have appreciated it.

Milan was a great friend and will be missed. He leaves behind an great legacy that will benefit countless kids and adults for generations going forward

We knew Milan through youth soccer in East Lyme in the late 90's, and worked with him through our handful of years there in offering our support of the teams and the East Lyme Soccer Club. Milan had a big generous warm and loving heart that readily shined through that sometimes crusty demeanor. Getting to know him, we could see he was absolutely selfless in devoting his time to youth soccer. He had no hesitation to give of himself, to teach, and to mentor, and this shows through all the community activities he supported and the success he had in these and many other endeavors. He touched the lives of so many with that spirit, leaving fond memories and he will be dearly missed. Our sincere condolences to Milan's family and close friends for his passing.

It was a pleasure to play on his East Lyme High School Women's Varsity soccer team from 1996-1999. So many fond memories of him shouting at us from the sidelines, his competitive spirit was strong!! I will never forget his voice yelling at me to, "Go get that ball!" His life has positively touched so many. He was so passionate about the sport of soccer. He was a profound influence during some of my formative high school years. It is clear he lived life to the fullest. It was an honor to be on his team and I am grateful to have known him. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

Milan was a great man with a huge heart a coach of coaches and player of the beautiful game par excellence. He did so much good for the whole community... His commitment to all of the young boys and girls women and men who grew to know and love Soccer in South Eastern CT. is the stuff of legend. The entire community is lessened by this loss , but those who knew him and worked , with him and played soccer with and because of him have benefited greatly in ways that will continue to persist for all of our betterment...His example will play on with the generations he taught and encouraged. Thank you Coach for all your
good work..

Milan was my supervisor, advisor and colleague. Most of all a great friend. As mentioned, he cared for his family first but did not neglect others. As a scientist he was committed to the correct and accurate reporting of facts. I will truly miss him as will the people he knew throughout his life.
