Morley Goldberg Obituary

Dr. Morley M. Goldberg of Washington Depot, died Thursday, (February 7, 2002) from a heart attack while skiing at Snowmass Village, CO. He was 74. During his 43 years of medical practice, Dr. Goldberg brought thousands of babies into the world until retiring from obstetrics to continue practicing gynecology. He was instrumental in establishing the residency program at Danbury Hospital specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Until his death, Dr. Goldberg continued to assist in gynecological surgeries at Danbury Hospital. Born on April 20, 1927 in Ottawa, Canada, he graduated with a B.A. from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He served with the United Naval Training Division aboard the H.M.S. Sheffield in the late 1940's. He later attended medical school at the University of Ottawa, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1954, ranking first in his class and winning the Silver Medal for highest standing. Dr. Goldberg interned at Bishop De Goesbriand Hospital in Burlington, VT, and completed his residency at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, NY in 1958. The following year, he established his medical practice in Danbury. Aside from his private practice, Dr. Goldberg held several key posts at Danbury Hospital. He served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1972-1979, Acting Chairman of the department from 1982-1983, President of the Medical Staff from 1984-1986 and Chief of the Division of Gynecology. After founding the obstetrics and gynecology residency program, he was responsible for supervising the doctors-in-training at the Women's Clinic at the hospital. Dr. Goldberg also served as volunteer physician with Project Hope, working the Navajo Indian Reservation in Ganado, AZ. He later returned to the reservation as an independent volunteer physician. An avid traveler and recreational athlete, Dr. Goldberg completed the San Francisco Marathon in 1984. He was a water-skier, scuba diver, hiker and expert skier, vacationing annually on the slopes of Snowmass for the past 26 years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Goldberg; four children, Lizabeth Goldberg of Glastonbury, Barbara Goldberg and her husband, Mark Mooney of Maplewood, NJ, Cindy Whitney and her husband, Bill of Clayton, MO, and Michael Goldberg and his wife, Rachel of Washington Depot. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katie, Sam, Maura and Paul; a sister, Evelyn Rivers of Ottawa, Canada; and two nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Jane Kellermann. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12, 11 a.m., at the United Jewish Center, 141 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Heart Association.
