Nicholas Pompei Obituary

Nicholas Pompei, 77, of Bristol, passed away on April 15, 2015 and went to be with the Lord, whom he honored and dearly loved. He was born on May 24, 1937 in Plainville, one of three sons of the late John and Nora (Apruzzese) Pompei. He grew up in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School in 1955. He attended Trinity College in Hartford and then transferred to Central Connecticut State College in New Britain, where he graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science with a major in Physics and a minor in Chemistry; also at CCSC, he earned a Master of Science degree in Physics (Secondary Education), conferred on May 31, 1974. He further went on to earn an A.A.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology summa cum laude at Waterbury State University. Nicholas served in the U.S. Army, applying his skills in electronics in classified projects. He was later a physics and chemistry teacher at Lewis S. Mills High School in Burlington. He then went on to become a systems design and applications engineer in assembly and testing at Pratt & Whitney and then retired as an electrical engineer at EDRO Corporation in Berlin, where he was awarded Employee of the Year in 2002. As a member of St. Matthew Church, he lived his life loving, honoring, worshipping, obeying, and being thankful to God; in so doing, while providing to his family was always of great importance to him, he displayed love, compassion, and generosity to not only his family but to friends and others as well. He had a gift for gardening, especially with his amazingly tall tomato plants, and he imaginatively landscaped his yard with verdant plants and vibrant flower gardens. He enjoyed being creative with electronics as a hobby. He was active with family and friends in many outdoor recreational activities. As kids, we especially enjoyed the summerlong camping trips! While he had an appreciation for all of God's creatures, he had a special fondness for birds and fed them joyfully during the winters. Nicholas is survived by his two sons, Stephen Pompei of Ronan, Montana and Gregg Pompei of Bristol; his brothers John Pompei and Joseph Pompei; nephews Christopher Pompei, Jody Pompei, Jay Pompei, Kevin Fillion and Marc Fillion; his ex-wife Alice Kufta; and long-time close friend Arlene Miller. Calling hours will be held on Saturday morning, April 25, 2015 from 9:00am until 11:00am at O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave, Bristol/Forestville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am at St. Matthew Church, Bristol. The burial will be at the convenience of the family. To leave an online message of condolences, share a memory or photo, please visit Nicholas' page at www.obrien-funeralhome.com.
