Norma Gean Henry, 77, of Windsor, beloved wife for 28 years of Ransford G. Henry, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 12, 2018, at UConn Health Center in Farmington. Born in St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies on December 13, 1940, daughter of the late Sydney Edgar and Sylvia (Watson) Bucknor, she was raised in St. Catherine, Jamaica and was a graduate of St. Jago High School. After high school, she continued her education at Shortwood Teachers' College in Kingston, Jamaica. Norma worked as a teacher and later as the Head Mistress at Friendship Primary School in Spanish Town, Jamaica. After immigrating to the United States in 1987, she settled in Hartford and then moved to Windsor in 1991. Committed to lifelong learning, Norma returned to school at Greater Hartford Community College, now Capitol Community College, where she studied to be a nurse. Norma started her nursing career at St. Francis Hospital and later worked at various nursing homes in the Hartford area. She retired in 2013, from Touchpoints at Farmington as the Assistant Director of Nursing, after over 20 years of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling with her husband both domestically and internationally. They shared many great memories on cruises and trips to Europe and Caribbean. Norma loved reading and was committed to lifelong learning. She was very social, easy-going, and loved by everyone who met her. A longtime member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Windsor, Norma served on the Usher Board as well as various other ministries within the life of the church. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Jasney Andrea Edwards of Spanish Town, Jamaica; two stepdaughters, Pauline Francis of Queens, NY and Judy Henry of Long Island, NY; two grandchildren, Christopher Francis and Ashley Cargill both of Queens, NY; three brothers, Brenton Edgar and his wife Faith of Loxahatchee, FL, Boddy Edgar of California, and Alex Edgar; two brothers-in-law, Rupert Henry and his wife Yvonne of Riverview, FL and Bishop Eric Henry and his wife Shirley of England; a sister-in-law, Annette Freeburn of St. Catherine, Jamaica; a special cousin, Dr. Gwendolyn Thomas of Kingston, Jamaica; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a brother, Warren Freeburn. Her family will receive friends on Friday, December 21, 10-11 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Service at 11 a.m., at the Hopewell Baptist Church, 280 Windsor Ave., Windsor. To everyone else she was Principal, the best that we have encountered. However, to my family she was everything (our Mrs. Edwards). She was my Mama's employer. As a result, I grew up in her home. She cared deeply and passionately not only for her students but for the families and community of each student. She was gifted. My exposure to the arts and love of media came from the exposures she pushed me to receive. As Principal of Friendship Primary School, she took an uneducated class and turned their children into lawyers, bankers, broadcasters, entrepreneurs, managers, marketers, authors, pilots, doctors, educators, police officers, administrators and so much more. Thank you Mrs. Norma Gean Henry for your impact and influence on my life. I am who I am today because of the foundation you gave me and the relationship you had with my family, A relationship that started when I was 2 years old and remained steadfast until you left Jamaican in 1987. Even from the USA, you mourned with us when we lost Pam and again when Mama passed. I regret that our brief conversation, last year ended abruptly but am I confident that my Mama and sister Pamella are welcoming you with outstretched arms in heaven. See you in Jamaica for the emotional final goodbye (tears).
