Norman Hanenbaum Obituary

Hanenbaum, Norman, 94, of Middletown, passed peacefully on 9-11-2022. Norman was born December 6, 1927, in Baltimore, MD, to Israel & Rose Hanenbaum. He attended Baltimore City Schools, and after high school, enlisted in the US Marine Corps. After returning from the military he attended University of Hartford, Hartt School of Music, graduating in 1957. He then went to work at Wethersfield High School until 1966, at which time he became interested in Special Education. He returned to U of H for his Masters in Special Education. Upon completion, he began a 25 year career teaching in Hartford public schools. In 1969, he was part of 15 Special Ed teachers who formed the Connecticut Special Olympics, where he remained an active volunteer for over 35 years. In 1972, he organized a talented group of special needs musicians. With Norman leading on the keyboard, the group was known as the Alleluia Players. They would perform dozens of times per year for Special Olympic events, even performing at the Kennedy Center. Norm purchased a van and equipment for the group. He would spend several hours picking up the musicians, performing with them, taking them out to eat with his own money, and driving them home. Norman's generous dedication of time and resources to the group is a testament to the kind of person he was. Norm was elected Post Commander of the Jewish war veterans Post 51 for two years, as well as Commander of the CT Department of Jewish War Veterans for an additional two years. He was inducted into the CT Veterans Hall of Fame at the State Capitol in 2012 by the Lieutenant Governor. Norm created a Klezmere Band at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe in Chester, leading it for 20 years. As an active professional saxophone musician, every Tuesday evening, he played in the George Manston 'Big' Band at the Westbrook Elks Club. He always said, "I have made numerous contributions to the community, I count my blessings and am thankful I can make a positive difference." He is survived by his daughter Marcy (Tom) Wien of Newport Beach, CA; son Barry (Helaine) Hanenbaum of West Hartford; grandchildren Curt (Lindy) and Haley Hanenbaum; Cara and Ethan Wien; sister Zelda Zaben of Baltimore, MD; brother Dr. Allen (Susan) Hanenbaum of Potomac, MD; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 14, at 12:00 pm, at Congregation Adath Israel Synagogue, 8 Broad Street in Middletown. Burial will follow in the State Veterans Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. Donations may be made to Special Olympics of CT, and Jewish War Veterans. Norm was such wonderful man with an excellent attitude! Norm was a really good friend of my mother Dr. Juanita Rentsch Millerick and my step-dad Dr. Joe Millerick. My ex Ricardo Moraga played guitar for several years with the Alleluia Players and in 1981 they were practicing for a CPTV rendition of the nativity scene. Norm, a Jewish man was directing the special needs students in the singing and playing of Christmas carols. They needed a baby Jesus so at the last minute my baby Max, who was at the rehearsal with his dad, got the role. I also remember picnics at Norm´s riverside house in East Haddam. When the Connecticut River flooded in 1982, Norm´s beautiful grand piano was ruined. With great humor, he put it outside near the river bank, set up a mannequin in the pose of a concert pianist and this became part of the riverboat tours. As I stated earlier, Norm had the beat attitude. Rest in peace my friend.

Mr. Hanenbaum taught me violin starting in 4th grade. We kept in touch over the years and I will remember him always with great fondness and affection. He was a wonderful teacher and a lovely human being. He will be missed by many but remain in our memories.

Mr Hannenbaum was just the best and kindest person I had to help me through school. I played music from 3rd grade and through high-school. He was funny, caring and just the best. He helped me get through school. I will always remember him with great fondness. I did connect with him several times, when he was at the Airport venue celebrating our soldiers, he came to our school reunions,. He was so special, he lived a meaningful life. My condolences for your loss. I'll always remember him, he was special.

Condolences to the Hanenbaum family.
Mr. Norman Hanenbaum´s knowledge and love of music, his joy in the art and craft of teaching, and his "outside" sense of humor made the Music Department at Wethersfield High School in the early 60´s a remarkable center of academic and social growth for a great many of us. All who benefitted from his teaching, coaching and friendship are better people for it. Rest In Peace, Mr. H.

It breaks my heart to hear of Norman´s passing. He was a huge asset to special Olympics Connecticut and to anyone that knew him. He had to be one of the kindest selfless men I have ever met. I moved to Florida approximately 14 years ago and Norman never forgot our friendship. He would still send me holiday cards and call to keep me posted on all the exciting news he had to share. On Monday I just thought I would give him a call because I hadn´t spoken with him in a little while. I ended up getting busy and not calling so in hearing he had passed on that day I just got chills all over. Norman will be missed by many as he was the true definition of a true and loyal friend. My love and condolences to his family. The world truly will never be the same.

MR. HANNENBAUM will always hold a special place in my heart. He introduced me to the wonderful world of music at Stephen Mix Mitchell Elementary School when he was right out of music school. His enthusiasm as our music teacher and orchestra maestro will never be forgotten. It was a privilege to honor him at our Class of 1964, 50th Class Reunion.
May he rest in peace.

I´m so sorry to learn of Norm´s passing. He was a giant of a man-generous, joyful, humble, loyal, and most of all, loving. I have so many memories of his amazing hallelujah players stunning crowds all over Connecticut and in dc and beyond and of visiting with him at his home on the banks of the river and listening to the keyboard and the sax and all the instruments raising a joyful sound to lighten and inspire us all. He was truly a founder of Special Olympics-a brave trail blazer in his own right. Thank you Norman!

Surely, the heavens are now resounding with hallelujahs even as we mourn. He was a great volunteer, a great teacher, a great musician, a great American and a great human being. Travel on easily Norman. I trust and pray that you are riding now on the light notes of singing angels joyfully welcoming you home forever.

Norm was an unstoppable, positive, delightful and reverent force. We loved him. I fondly recall boating downstream past his riverside home to see the piano and the adorned model pianist at the shore. He had a great sense of humor. I grieve with you. May his memory be a blessing.

We offer our condolences to the extended Hanenbaum family and some photos from his 90th birthday to hopefully bring a smile to your face. Such a kind, giving, and talented friend to all. Not only do we remember all the Special O, veteran, and special Ed achievements. We remember your 7 years behind the Very Special Arts Festival in Guilford. Rest In Peace, Norm. We can almost hear that band in the sky. God bless your family with only happy memories.

To the HANENBAUM family. We will all miss Norm so much and offer our sincerest condolences. We are so disappointed that we will be out of state during his funeral Wednesday. We will visit him at the Veteran´s Cemetery where Barb´s dad lies, as soon as we return. Of course his obit could have gone on and on but they´d need to add a whole other section to the paper. Besides serving on early Boards with him and starting the awards program that became the Hall of Fame, he was instrumental (no pun intended) in the creation of the CT Very Special Arts Festival that we ran for 7 years at the Guilford Fair. Sharing some photos from his 90th birthday festivities. Such a legacy! Such a kind, funny & generous man. Such a rich long life. Rest In Peace, Friend Love to you.

Dear Barry and Family,

We are so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing. We share your loss.

A man of great accomplishment, generosity, and great caring for the underserved in the community. Self-deprecating, yet slightly eccentric ( we'll always remember his decorations at the house in Haddam!)

It was an honor to serve with him in so many capacities in JWV for many years, and we'll miss him.

May his memory forever b e a blessing, and may he rest in peace.
