Panteleon Tsakiris Obituary

A man with swagger, who would never leave home without being meticulously dressed and stylishly groomed…usually soft spoken …with a sheepish smile that you could not miss in a crowded room- Panteleon, Peter, Pete, Pantelis-were all names which matched his unique, diverse, and unforgettable personality... but, probably, and most importantly, were the titles "Ba" and "Papou". Panteleon Tsakiris, 81, of Newington, Ct., passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2023, at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at New Britain General.

Peter was born and grew up in Gennadi, Rhodes, Greece. There he developed a love for Nature, the outdoors and wildlife. Growing up, his childhood passion was mastering the use of a slingshot which later translated to small game hunting. This endeavor, of course, requires a keen eye, patience , and zeal for perfection- all qualities that so fluidly transferred to his stellar career as a master barber. Diligently, and loyally, he has served three generations of statewide clients, many of whom became close friends. He was a consummate professional, continuing his art, at his landmark Hartford South End barbershop to this very day.

He is survived by his loving wife and life long partner, Elaine, son John and fiancé Toniann, daughter Kara, and beloved granddaughter Kaleigh. He maintained a very close relationship with his three surviving sisters, Despina, Demetra, and Anastasia. He was predeceased by two brothers, Savvas and Antonio, beloved parents Ioannis and Paraskevi (Antonaras) Tsakiris, and loving father and mother in law, George and Kallie Bonatsakis, and brother in law, Michael Bonatsakis. He is remembered and honored by countless cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, dear friends, and fellow barbers, specifically, Hector and Leo, who were an Important essence in the creation of Peter's Men's Hairstyling- a career spanning sixty years!

Peter was a man so abundantly proud of his children, John and Kara, and his precious grandchild, Kaleigh. He reveled in all their accomplishments and their respected, good character. He tirelessly loved chronicling the precious moments in their lives with countless photos which adorned both his shop and family homes. He was present for all their important occasions, but most importantly, he was just always THERE!! His last twenty years were filled with the pure joy of "his Kaleigh". They were two peas in a pod- the toddler and Papou throwing popcorn to the wildlife at the ferry in Rocky Hill…Sharing a fortune cookie message which always, miraculously, read "Papou loves Kaleigh" and, just basically, always whispering their secret slogan, "You and Me Kid"!!!

Our Family thanks everyone for the outpouring of heartfelt messages and prayers in honor of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Husband and Friend. May his memory be eternal.

Funeral services for Peter will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 11 a.m, at St George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Ave., Hartford. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Elaine, Kara, John and Kaleigh:

I am so sorry. I just learned of Peter´s passing upon calling the shop today.

I have been a regular customer of his for about 50 years - since my mid-teens.

Peter was family to me. We had many heart-to-heart conversations and stories of family through the years. All of my 3 kids first haircuts and beyond.

I last sat in his chair on Saturday Nov 4. He looked and said he felt better than when I saw him in September.

I asked about retirement and Greece and he said he was hoping to get there soon but that November would probably be his last month. He said to call the shop anyway but that he "had a good run" and wanted to go out on top.

Peter did some of his best scissor and razor work that day - on top of his craft to the end.

He said he would miss the conversations and that cutting hair/the shop/ his profession never felt like work. He enjoyed socializing, sharing stories and laughs and especially handing out lollipops to the kids at the shop. That day he told the story (again) about your vacation to Puerto Rico when a kid at the airport recognized "the Lollipop man".

Peter was a special man. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather to be sure. An institution in Hartford, yes.

Mostly, Peter was a man who loved to make people smile.

Fond memories.

To the Tsakiris family I am sorry for your loss. Your father was always smiling whether I saw him at his work or elsewhere like Gennadi, Rhodes. My mother's side of the family is also from the same village for the past ninety years. He was a hard working Greek. I worked nearby his shop for parts of the 80s and 90s and was able to observe his dedication daily. I was saddened to see him on the news recently as a victim when his shop was broken into and items were stolen. I did not know he was still working. I had hoped he would have retired in Gennadi yet he probably stayed local for family and friends which were always important to him. He was always very kind to me. Again, sorry for your loss.

Dear Elaine, John and Kara,
As close neighbors and friends you know that I got to know Peter almost as soon as he came to the US.
I always felt that Peter was a friend. I saw how he took George and Kaye into his life and as he loved them, they loved him. Peter had an easy way with everyone. I always felt comfortable in just stopping into his shop to just say 'Hi' and hang out even if I didn't need a haircut. Peter was special and he will be missed. I also miss you too all the way from California.

Very saddened to hear about Peter passing when calling to make an appointment to get my haircut this past week having done so with him for over 50 years! Peter was so dedicated to his profession and was always accommodating to me all these years. He even brought me into his home to get my haircut during Covid. Most importantly, he became a good dear friend. Getting my haircut was always a pleasure given our conversations about family, friends, UConn basketball, Yankees/RedSox trash talk, and our Greek community. I will surely miss him and how I always looked forward to my appointments!

I will never forget the memory of an elated Peter playfully tossing his months-old beautiful baby daughter Kara above his head, and catching her in one hand! He glowed at her while she giggled and giggled from above. Somehow that baby knew she was so safe in her adoring dad´s care. I can see it and hear it all this very moment.
Memory Eternal, dear Koumbaro!

Thio Pete, I can’t believe you are gone. It seems like only yesterday I got my signature Thio Pete hug and kiss, that always made you feel loved. There are not enough words to say what a an amazing person and man you were. You were like a second dad to all of us and were always there when anyone, especially your family, needed you. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and always being there for all of us. John, Kara, and Kaleigh were so lucky to have you as their BA and PAPPOU, their kindness and love of life are a true reflection of both Thia Eleni and yourself. May your memory be eternal.

It was with heavy heart to hear the news of Peter's passing. I didn't meet Peter until later in life when I moved to Newington but as soon as I did, I quickly realized what a kind, gentle and sincere person I was so fortunate to meet. Over the years he always met me with a smile and kiss on the cheek and hug. Peter reveled his time with family and friends as he enjoyed sharing his stores of upcoming hunting trip or a special day shared with Kaleigh. Peter was a friend to all and he will be dearly missed. Rest easy my friend till we meet again.

My heart sank as I read of Peter’s passing. He was always so kind to my children and I when we lived across the street. He would welcome us over for barbecues, stop over with a cup of coffee and the biggest smile on his face. He was a truly kind human who made an effort to pay it forward every day.
