Paul Devin Obituary

DEVIN, Paul W. Paul W. Devin, of Unionville, beloved husband of Lucy Devin, died Friday, (August 29, 2008) after a long illness. He was born in Hartford, February 5th, 1936 to the late Bernadette (Foley) and Paul L. Devin. He was a carpenter by trade and his creative yet practical approach to his craft was demonstrated not only in the homes of his many satisfied customers, but also in the personal residence he built for his family over 40 years ago and still resided in. A few years after moving in to that home, he added a barn and, with the help of his wife and children, began his venture as a gentleman farmer. A great source of pride for him was to be able to say that everything on the table came from his farm. He was also an avid hunter and, until his rare illness which robbed him of his strength and vitality, enjoyed hunting annually with his brother and good friends. Those friends, neighbors and family members remember Paul as being a fun loving, yet helpful, individual who could always figure out how to get something done even when it didn't seem possible. During the Korean War, Paul was stationed in the bitter cold of Alaska as a member of an army support unit where other members of his unit enjoyed the easygoing and warm manner he exhibited while accomplishing whatever task was asked of him. After the diagnosis of his rare heart condition, Paul gradually lost the ability to continue handling whatever situation came his way and, even as he despaired over his condition, he was thankful for his wife Lucy and for the care she gave him. He was a hard worker and a devoted family man, who thought the world of his family. He had been a member of The French Business Men's Association. Paul leaves behind his children, Pamela Puchalski and her husband Gary of Middlefield, Douglas Devin and his wife Kimberly of Rocky Hill, Janice Devin of New Britain and David Devin of Burlington, seven grandchildren, Marissa, Deanna and Garrett Puchalski, Andrew, Victoria, Alexander and Nathan Devin, his brothers, Ronald Devin and his wife Jean of South Windsor and Maurice Devin and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Dennis Devin. Friends may call at The Ahern Funeral Home, 111 Main St., Rt. 4, Unionville TODAY, September 3, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral procession from The Ahern Funeral Home will be Thursday, September 4, at 9:15 a.m. followed by the Funeral Liturgy in the Church of St. Mary Star of the Sea, Unionville at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Paul wished to have donations in his name be made to The Dennis Paul Devin Scholarship Fund, University of Hartford, ATTENTION: Toni Robinson, Director of Donor Relations, 312 Bloomfield Ave., West Hartford, CT 06117.

Mrs. Devin and Family - My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Unfortunately I did not have the pleasure of meeting Paul before he became ill, but after spending some time with the family, hearing Doug talk about his dad, and seeing what a great gardener and handyman Doug has become, it's clear that he was a wonderful man who enjoyed spending time with his family and teaching them some great lessons and crafts - so he certainly lives on in spirit. My sincere sympathies go out to all of you. Reminisce about the wonderful memories he has left you with -they are yours to cherish and comfort you for years to come!

Aunt Lucy, please accept my sympathy and know that my thoughts are with you and my cousins. I hold special memories of those family gatherings at your home when I was a kid. I am so glad that I was able to visit with you and uncle Paul when I ate most of your brownies while listening (but not participating) in a political discussion between him and my dad. I'm sorry I can not be there, but I know you have a tight family who will help you during your time of need.
