Peter Wade Obituary

Peter B. Wade, M.D., 65, of Farmington, beloved husband of Joyce M. (Hanrahan) Wade passed away at St. Francis Hospital on Sunday March 27, 2022. Born in Saranac Lake, NY on October 12, 1956, the son of the late Philip B. Wade, M.D. and Helen B. (Hickey) Wade, Peter was raised in Quaker Hill, CT and attended schools there. Dr. Wade received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the College of the Holy Cross in 1978. He went on to Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, graduating in 1982 with his medical degree. From 1982 to 1985 Peter completed an Internal Medicine Residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital of Boston. From 1985-1988 Peter completed a Neurology Residency at Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C. Peter completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Neurology. He was currently serving as the Medical Director of Neurology at the Mandell Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Center at Mt. Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Hartford. In addition, Dr. Wade was a member of the Neurology Department at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center. At the Mandell Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Center, he was responsible for evaluating and treating over 3,200 patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Dr. Wade was a member of the Saint Francis Hospital and Mount Sinai family for over three decades, Dr. Wade was the founding medical director of the Mandell MS Center. From its opening in February 2008, he was responsible for the immediate growth and oversight of the clinical program. But perhaps more impactful than that, he was known for his compassion and empathy of his patients and the MS community. He advocated for change in the treatment of MS as he dedicated his career to the enhancement of comprehensive MS care and inspired all those around him to do the same. Dr. Wade was passionate about carrying out the vision of the Mandell MS Center and considered his patients and colleagues to be part of his MS family. In 2014 he was recognized by his colleagues and was awarded the Distinguished Physicians Award at St. Francis Hospital. Dr. Wade was best known for his charisma and wit, his appreciation for the role of humor in life, his ability to connect with patients and colleagues at a human and vulnerable level, and his caring nature. When not caring for patients, he enjoyed traveling and playing golf at the Golf Club of Avon. Recently, Peter won the 2021 Fall Member-Member tournament with one of his golfing buddies. He enjoyed traveling to Florida, especially to Sarasota and Longboat Key. However, his greatest joy was spending time with his wife Joyce, the love of his life. For his 65th Birthday, Joyce gave Peter the gift of attending Boston Red Sox Fantasy Baseball Camp. Not only did he have a wonderful time, but he was awarded the 2022 Boston Red Sox Fantasy Camp Woody Starr Hustle Award. Due to complications of the Covid virus, Dr. Wade's plans and dreams of retirement will unfortunately never be realized. Peter is survived by his wife of 36 years; Joyce M. (Hanrahan) Wade of Farmington, his brothers; James Wade and his wife Alisa Rock of Baltimore, MD, John Wade, DMD and his wife Maria Saccoccio, DMD of North Kingston, RI and Daniel Wade and his wife Rose of Boulder, CO, his sister; Ann Iandiorio of Acton, MA, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law; Terrell Iandiorio. Peter's family will receive family and friends on Friday, April 1, 2022, from 4PM-8PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family, Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon, CT 06001. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday April 2, 2022, at 10AM at the Church of St. Patrick, 110 Main Street, Farmington, CT 06032. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Ave, Hartford, CT 06101. In lieu of flowers donations in Dr. Wade's memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO Box #91891, Washington, DC 20090, Mandell Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Center, 490 Blue Hills Ave, Hartford, CT 06112 or the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 or to a charity of your choice in Peter's name. I was a patient of Dr Wade for many years. He also treated my son when he was waiting for his kidney transplant for neuropathy and seizures. I had a stroke at the ago of 32. He was an amazing person and doctor that would make you laugh instead of cry when you were frustrated when you weren´t getting better. My son was 19 when he met him and loved his character and the words he would use. No doctor would normally use. He helped him greatly with the neuropathy pain he was experiencing and my son was in a wheelchair before he received his transplant. Dr Wade told him he wanted to hear when he was walking again because he was going to. I told him at the last appointment I had that my son was walking without a cane and working part time and he was so happy.
I gave him a great big hug at my last meeting and I am glad I did. I have missed him since and I always will. Rest in peace my great man, and physician you will be greatly missed by all who knew you.

April 21, 2022

Today, April 21, 2022 during a physical therapy (PT) appointment I learned of Dr. Peter Wade´s passing.

Shocked, in disbelief, saddened, and somewhat bewildered, I exited the PT appointment, proceeded to the first level and went into the Springfield Mandel Center for MS office and spoke with the front desk staff to offer my condolences.

I offer condolences to Dr. Wade´s entire family as well as to all professionally connected to him or intimately knew him.

Having moved back into the Northeast from Florida, it was October 29th 2015...my first MS appointment with Dr. Wade; he´d been recommended to me by Dr. Robertson of Tampa. I knew from this initial appointment, Dr. Wade was one of a kind. He was always patient-focused, presenting with a warm smile and humorous story. I even had the pleasure and opportunity to "share the stage" with him as a Patient Ambassador for a MS medication. Even in this, he was supportive and expressed accolades.

November 11th, 2021 was my last visit with Dr. Wade. We agreed that I could see him at the Hartford office if needed since he would no longer travel to the Springfield office. We ended that appointment by sharing experiences at Holy Cross, discussing the impact of Covid-19 and navigating vaccinations.

Dr. Wade, you´ll be missed and thank you for your dedication to helping those impacted by multiple sclerosis.

My deepest condolences to Dr.Wades beloved wife and family. I was so saddened and shocked to hear of this, this evening! Dr Wade had a way... from calling on him for work and then now as seeing him as a patient. I have never forgotten his wit and compassion. After my diagnosis of MS...I was scared to say the least, however, he was so reassuring and with his wit and compassion and steadfast education of things, he made me fill at ease! He was a straight to the point kind of guy! A lot of people benefited from him whether they worked for him, with him, were friends with him or what ever the case may have been, they were blessed to have known a good man! Rest easy Dr Wade! The Ms community, along with everyone that knew you will miss you!

My parents are devasted by the news of Peter's passing. My father has MS and had the same Dr. in Worcester for a number of years. My parents enjoyed visiting with Peter at their appointments. In fact, when Peter saw the canes I bought him - Peter took them from him and took them to someone in the hospital to take note that his new canes are what they needed for his patient. To his wife and family, Peter was a wonderful person and Dr. we are so sorry for your loss. We are all honored to have met him as a Dr. and person.

My husband always came with me to my appts, two appts ago he had to tell us & show us pictures about what his wife did for him for his Birthday. Joyce, that was such a blessing to him, he couldn´t stop talking about it. So sorry for you lost, and Thank you for your patience on sharing him with us.

As a patient of Dr. Wade for 18 years I was devastated to hear of his passing. I send my deepest condolences to his family. He was an amazing man who treated with care and great humor. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to Dr. Wade's family. He was my neurologist for 15 years at the Mandell Center, and I considered him a friend. He always had a joke - or several - to tell at my appointments, and he was always a comfort to me and my family. He encouraged, entertained, and educated me as I struggled with this disease, and he spoke frankly and honestly about what to expect from it. He encouraged me to embrace new medicines that have changed my life for the good. And we spoke often of golf and family and how to live a good life. I will miss him dearly.

Dennis and I are heartbroken to hear about the loss of Dr. Wade. We´ll forever be grateful for his wit, kindness, and knowledge. We knew to expect a good laugh each and every visit as they always included his joke of the day accompanied by his devilish grin. He made my journey with MS easier to navigate because whenever he said, "I get it." you knew he did. To his wife and family, thank you for sharing him with us. May your numerous fond memories together provide you some level of comfort at this devastating time. Heaven has gained a new angel who may occasionally tell a slightly bawdy joke when even angels and God need a good laugh. Rest In Peace, Dr. Wade. You will be missed.

Dr. Wade was one of a kind! He was my
Neurologist until we moved to New
Hampshire. His wit &sense of humor would ease any bump in the road that I was facing. Dealing with a much larger Medical Center outside
Boston lacks one major thing. Dr Peter Wade!!! Peter and Joyce were always so kind when they would see My , now late Mom, Sheila Conran at Effy´s on
Sunday´s. My Mom would always thank him for his care he was giving me!
Thank you Dr. Wade for getting me through some very scary days. Rest In Peace My Friend!

Peter and I were classmates and teammates at Holy Cross as freshmen on the HC junior varsity baseball team. Peter was a relief pitcher and I pretty much sat on the bench that year. Whenever, he got a chance, Peter would study Organic chemistry in the dugout.
That always impressed me. The coach was not thrilled with it but allowed it. Peter was a better doctor than a pitcher. Thank God for his patients and everyone else he encountered.
We lost touch after college. However, my mother worked for many years in the ER at Saint Francis. Periodically, she would relay a story about Peter to me.
I could tell by her accounts he was an incredible physician and a beautiful human being.
The medical field and others outside of the profession will miss him.
My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to Joyce and Peter´s entire family and friends.

Dr. Wade was a blessing. He helped normalize MS. Made you feel that it was okay because he´s been there and had it too. There was never a question that he wouldn´t answer at a meeting and in as a second opinion. He was honest, caring, smart, dedicated, witty and always smiling. I am devastated that we lost him. Unlike all of you who have left condolences, I have not seen Peter Wade for 40 years. We graduated together from Holy Cross in 1978 and from Tufts Medical School in 1982. However, I remember Peter exactly as you do: kind, caring, empathetic and very witty (ok sometimes a little cynical and sarcastic as well). We knew of his passion for the study and treatment of MS...clearly his career and the care he provided so many is testimony to that great passion. His passing is a huge loss to any and all that knew and loved him. Rest In Peace, Peter.

Dr. Wade was such a blessing to me. He listened to me and believed me when no one else did. I don´t know how I´m going to find another doctor like him. I was heartbroken to learn of the passing of Dr. Wade, my MS doctor for the last 15 years. Not only was he a brilliant neurologist but also a great storyteller and aspiring comedian. I was one of his original 7 patients that started the Botox injections for migraines. He always had a joke or two to lighten the 20 injections that I received. His stories of the Red Sox and vacations, especially Italy. His wife´s shopping trip. The man who made shoes. The beautiful hotels, he enjoyed every second of the vacation. I was his patient for over 20 years, Botox for 17. There were a lot of stories and laughter in that office. I will miss him forever, I appreciate everything he did for me. I am so sorry for his passing. My condolences to his wife that he loved so much. His brothers and sister, nieces and nephews you all are in my prayers, my your love carry you through this difficult times.

I worked in the Mandell MS Center with Dr. Wade from December 2013 - December 2021, my office was a few feet from his office. My role gave me the opportunity to interact with Dr. Wade on a daily basis.

He was our leader, the visionary and the key ingredient for the success of the Mandell Center for Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Care. Dr. Wade was an advocate for his patients and understood the value of offering patients comprehensive multiple sclerosis care and treatment. He delivered the best medical care so his patients could continue to enjoy their families, community, work and leisure time despite their challenges.

There were times when Dr. Wade would start a sentence by saying "Joyce said" we would look at him and with a twinkle in his eyes he would point to his chest and say "My Joyce". He made sure we knew he was talking about his wife, the love of his life! My prayers go out to his wife Joyce and the rest of his family. May God continue to comfort you during this time.

Dr. Peter B. Wade was a one of a kind physician, a man of humor, quality and integrity, a prince among men.

What are we the patients of Dr. Peter B. Wade going to do without him, without the concern and dignity that he gave to all of us, without the patience and understanding, without his corny jokes and laughs, again without him. We will NEVER walk the halls of the MS center and feel the same, but what we will do is remember him forever and treasure every memory. We will mourn for our doctor and friend, and thank God for the honor and privilege that we had to know him. Thank you Joyce and family for sharing and sacrificing a piece of Peter with us, we are forever grateful. I pray to God for an abundance of comfort and peace during your time of need and Dr. Wade rest now until we meet again.

First Off, my deepest condolences and sympathy to his wife and family, my prayers to you all during this most difficult time ...
I was a patient of Dr Wade since 2009, he was the most compassionate, caring ,kind ,funny guy ,and if I asked a question wether if it was stupid or not he would answer...He was always positive, and he would love it when we talk about the Boston Red Sox or New England Patriots, on who's who or how New England didn't play well or Boston and their year, I will miss that about him too ,I can't talk to him about Baseball..
But thank You for Sharing him with us....He saved my life and for the better, I am heartbroken and still in shock that he is gone..He was a beautiful person with a beautiful soul...He will be sorely missed, The Mandell Center won't never be the Same without his smiling face ever again .

Dr wade, As an RN who is supposed to be used to this, I am almost at a lost for words, but here it is. God created you to work diligently with the Multiple Sclerosis community, and you answered your call of duty as a neurologist with humility, compassion, empathy, and humor. You gave us all hope, and we were inspired by your motivation to keep fighting to help us all. Your presence at the Mandel Center will be truly missed. You took care of me for about 10 years and I always dreaded thinking about your retirement because I did not know who else would understand like you did, because you had MS. During this difficult time, we will be Praying for your wife and family. We all know that this loss is one that really hurts! Dr Wade you really lived up to the oath of being a Doctor, but your work here is now done. SIP Dr Wade, you were one of the best, and know that you will never be forgotten and will be in our hearts forever!!

I was so sad to hear of the recent loss of Dr Peter Wade. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to know him during my 47 years as a critical care RN at St Francis Hospital. He exemplified what a physician should be. He always respected nursing input on his patients and made sure to always include them in his patient plan of care. Dr Wade had a wonderful sense of humor and always made sure to leave us with " the joke of the day".
My deepest sympathies to his wife and family. I´m sure that God greeted him after his earthly work was done and said " Job well done Peter"

Peter Wade had the most interesting sense of dry humor. I never knew if he was being serious or was joking until he delivered the punch line!
He was such an advocate for all his MS patients. His compassion, concern, and care for his patients was a true passion of his.
He always spoke so lovingly about his wife Joyce. I referred to her as St. Joyce for putting up with him all those years!
I will sorely miss Dr. Wade.
My prayers and thoughts go out to his family especially Joyce Wade.
He was a true blessing.

Dr. Wade was a Godsend to all his patients. He was not only a great Neurologist, but a comedian, advocate and therapist. I am deeply saddened over the loss of this incredible man! They broke the mold after him and filling his shoes will be near impossible. My deepest condolences to his dear wife and family. Rest In Peace, Dr. Wade.

I knew Dr Wade professionally as well as being the daughter of a patient. He was so compassionate not only with my Mom but with us (her family). A true physician and kind human being. Prayers of strength for his family.

I will always appreciate having Dr Wade as a compassionate doctor. Having worked in the medical field myself, I've seen the worst of MS. For the last 16 years, I always knew he would give me the best care working with and for me. God truly used this man.
I will miss seeing him.

September 18, 1995 is the day I met Dr. Wade. I had gone blind in my left eye. He became my rock and the reason I am still here today. Over the last 27 years he saw me through all the ups and downs of a remit relapse MS patient.
My heart breaks for his wife, who he always spoke of with obvious love. I enjoyed "threatening" him with telling her of the latest shoe sales. I want to thank Mrs. Wade for sharing Peter with us.
He was not only my doctor, but my friend as well. I will miss him all the rest of my days.
Rest well

I am so saddened by this loss. Dr. Wade has been in my life for 11 years. He had a way of being compassionate and real all at the same time. He understood what you were feeling. He always made all of us laugh. He was my beacon of hope. I will miss him terribly.

From working with Dr Wade as one of his Pharma reps to then being diagnosed with Ms and having him treat me we have years of incredible memories. The care he gave was filled with compassion and humor and hugs. He will be missed so very much. Sending Joyce and his family our love and prayers.

He was the first man I met with MS after my diagnosis of also having MS. He inspired me from day one that I could still be productive even with having MS. He never seemed to slow down when I would see him at Mandell. His wit and his advice and his humor were one of a kind. You will be sorely missed Dr. Wade. Rest In Peace sir .

Broken hearted and in disbelief- Peter was always a force to be reckoned with despite his own health issues. I was honored to work beside him caring for MS patients. My deepest sympathy to Joyce and the rest of his family. He was loved and will be missed

Sympathy and sadness for one special doctor that I had the pleasure to meet in person and whom touched my heart and soul.
Having MS myself for over 50 years, he always showed compassion, caringness and understanding towards us all.
My last cherished memory was during a medical visit in October, he wished me the best with a true hug to keep fighting.

My most memorable memory is when I was able to be your 1:1 nurse when you had open heart surgery. Your appreciation was overwhelming when you always made sure on the date of you surgery anniversary, you took the time to find me and thank me. Your caring kindness towards your patients will always will stand out of why we chose health care as our profession. You will truly be missed.
