Philip Worley Obituary

Philip E. Worley Jr, 86 of New Hartford, CT, passed away peacefully on June 30, 2023. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 63 years, Kathleen C. Worley in 2019.

"Phil" was born in New York, NY on October 5, 1936, and was immediately adopted by Philip E. and Adelaide (Della) Worley of New Milford, CT. He attended New Milford High and the Canterbury School, before going to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1958, he earned his undergraduate degree in Management Engineering at RPI, married Kathleen (Kathy) Carpenter of Albany, NY, joined the Air Force and had his first child. He was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1961. Phil and Kathy had four children within 5 years and the family settled in Canton Center, CT. He started his engineering career at Veeder Root Inc, in Hartford, earned a Master's degree at UCONN, and became a Product Marketing Manager. He left Veeder Root in 1972 and opted for self-employment, with several entrepreneurial ventures including; Avon Clock & Lighting, Worley Ace Hardware, and a Radio Shack franchise. He stopped working after joining Goulet Printing Company for several years.

His true passion was aviation. As an avid pilot he pursued flying throughout his later years in life. Many flights were to a favorite breakfast spot in New England with his dear friend Arnie Goldman.

Phil and Kathy loved the outdoors, and frequently took the family camping, skiing, and sailing throughout New England. Phil was a runner and would meet friends after work at the West Hartford Reservoir, occasionally followed by a cold beer. Their home was filled with numerous cherished animals. They raised German Shepherd puppies for the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation and had many other dogs as well. Phil was passionate about community involvement/volunteering and was part of: The North Canton Volunteer Fire Department (25 years), Rotary of Avon-Canton (past President), Canton Chamber of Commerce (Service Award 2016). He served as a Trustee for many terms at The Canton Center Congregational Church, where he was a dedicated member for over 60 years.

He is survived by his children: Robin Worley and spouse Tom Barnard of New York, NY, Kevin Worley of Freeport, FL, Jeff Worley and spouse Karen Worley of Canton, CT, Jennifer McCormick and spouse John McCormick of New Hartford, CT, grandchildren: Christine Watt, Victoria Chassin, Melissa Marthe, Mallory McCormick, Sam Worley, Nathaniel Chassin, Mac McCormick, Benjamin Worley, Madison Chassin, and great grandchild Lalah Watt.

The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Cherry Brook for their loving and attentive care for their father. A memorial service will be held in the fall.

Memorial donations may be made: Dog Star Rescue, PO Box 721, Canton, CT 06019 or First Congregational Church of Canton Center, 84 Cherry Brook Rd, Canton Center, CT 06022. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuneralhome.com.

To the family of Phil Worley -- We at the Avon/Canton Chamber of Commerce are deeply saddened at the passing of your father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

I first came to know Phil many years ago as a customer of Worley Ace Hardware. The store had everything you could need or want in a local hardware store, yet never lost its homey charm. I distinctly remember greeting his black labs, Molly and Tara, each time I entered to shop.

The next time I had the privilege of meeting Phil was in 2003, when he became executive director of the Canton Chamber of Commerce. Over the years we worked on joint networking events and met at various business functions. No matter the occasion, Phil always seemed to have a camera around his neck, taking pictures to preserve the moment.

The last time I saw Phil was about three or so years ago, in New Hartford center. I was meeting with a Chamber member, sitting alongside the Farmington River, when he came strolling by with his then black lab by his side and stopped to say a quick hello.

Phil's commitment to advocating for local businesses, involvement in and support of community organizations, and fostering lasting relationships throughout the area will be remembered by many.

We here at the Avon/Canton Chamber of Commerce will never forget the leadership and light he brought to our organization.

I remember a man of great character and concern for his fellow human beings. We met through our association at the Avon-Canton Rotary. Phil was always ready with a new idea or project. I will miss him.
