Raymond Newton Obituary



Raymond R. Newton, 79, of Newington, husband of Madeleine (Vallieres) Newton, passed away Tuesday (May 31, 2016) at Hartford Hospital. Born in New Britain, son of the late Raymond E. and Eleanor (Peichert) Newton, he lived in Kensington for 12 years, moving to Newington in 1976. A graduate of New Britain High School, Class of 1955, he received a Bachelor's in Elementary Ed from CCSC, a Masters and 6th Year in Reading from CCSU and a 6th Year in Educational Administration from SCSU. Ray worked for the Newington Board of Ed as a Teacher, Reading Consultant and Principal of the New Meadow School and later was the Curriculum Supervisor in Newington, retiring in 1995. He helped start the Newington Evening High School Program in 1980; was an Adjunct Professor at CCSU and was Chapter President of the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity at CCSU. Ray was a member of the Newington Historical Society and a member and Past President of the Newington Educational Student Assistance Fund. Besides his wife Madeleine, he leaves a son, Russell Newton of Newington; two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Rossignol and her husband Glenn of Newington; and Lucinda Pinto of New Britain; a sister-in-law, Barbara Newton of Plainville; six grandchildren, Ashley Newton; Joshua, Rachel and Noah Rossignol; Terry and Joseph Pinto; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are Tuesday 9 AM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10 AM at Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church Street, Newington, CT 06111. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday evening 6 to 8 PM at Carlson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Newington Student Assistance Fund, c/o TD Bank, 1133 Main Street, Newington, CT 06111 or to the Church of the Holy Spirit or to ALS Association CT Chapter, 4 Oxford Road Unit E4, Milford, CT 06460. My sincere condolences to Madeleine, Ray's children and grandchildren. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. I taught with Ray for many years at Central Connecticut State University. He was a wonderfully warm and jovial presence in our Department. Students and colleagues enjoyed his company and learned much from him. He will be missed by all of us. May he rest in peace.
